Show Mogno Times, November 21, 1979, Page 5 Midi!! hi By Suzanne Ctad Retirement plan Hansen Its been fun for our family to explore more about this bird, the turkey, that we eat every year for Thanksgiving. Our children really enjoy the background that we give them. It helps kids imagine the way it kinda was way back then, in the times when the first Thanksgiving really took place. Imagine how the early morning woodland sounded in the colonial days when the forests were full of wild turkeys! It was easy then to bring back quite a number of them after hunting for only a few hours. Wild turkeys are difficult to find today. Little by little they almost disap- , . as peared farmers domesticate them. Turkeys are unpredictable and not very intelligent, for they do whatever they see other turkeys doing. It is difficult to teach young turkeys, called poults, to eat. They might be hungry and have food aU over the ground, and just walk on top of it with their heads in the air. Poults could starve if they were not taught to look down and find the feed. However, some turkeys are capable of a certain amount of intelligence.. One farmer tells of his turkey smart behavior during a hurricane. After the storm started the birds left their houses, faced the wind, and hunched close to the ground in a V formation such as wild geese make when flying. More turkeys in the area lived through that windstorm than any , , ' priority for women love is o neiv baby: to began SMITH, Mr. and Mrs. Craig, 5378 Silvertip Dr., Kearns, daughter. daughter. Not necessarily, but plan for the future. A 1979 government financial study shows most - women 65 and older live on poverty levels. That is 3 to 1 over the number of men who live on poverty levels. Many of these same women live on a TOTAL of $1800 a year. The cold, hard fact is: Most women dont contribute as much as a man to Social Security and only get a small percentage of the husbands retirement fund when he dies. Or the wife receives none of the retirement fund if they were divorced after many years of marriage. Look at all available plans. There are several government approved plans, which are tax exempt. Today we buy turkeys from a $50 million industry that provides than for roasting and for processing into turkey hams or turkey hot dogs. However served, turkey makes good eating. This popular meat is also very nutritious. One turkey has more protein for its weight than any other animal raised for meat. Although people enjoy turkey year round, it had become traditional fare for Thanksgiving. On that day of gratitude Americans eat close to 40 million turkeys. Now thats a lot of aside,, with our children, to review. .that they , Pe gjngs Then we .,m themselves are make a list together of the things which that child has told us. We talk about each one. What a special way of helping that child to see all the reasons he has for being happy. Then when things arent going so well, you both can go over that list of positive things again. For smaller children it is fun along with the list, to have them draw the things that they are thankful for. They can cut them out and glue them out of ' colored paper, then cover them with clear contact paper and make some special Thanksgiving placemats. This is something interesting that everyone will enjoy looking at. Help make this Thanksgiving a real special one by really sharing it with your little ones. In opening your thoughts to your children they will get to know you better and you will also get to know them better..
