The word link may bring to mind the stationary .rain-e- r used by airplane pilots, but the same company is now producing driving simulators to include the important area of preparing students to stay alive and drive safely and well on todays crowded higi ways. -- students are involved not merely in the old inclassroom and road-typ- e struction, but a newer four-stadriving education program. Teaching the students are Salt Lake County instruc Todays ge dlDWODDgjr, tors, Dick Smuin, 2268 Suada Dr., Holladay and Howard G. Condie, 3911 W. 4000 W Granger. Students are required to take at least 30 hours of classroom work; however, those at Cyprus have received the equivalent of 52 hours of instruction already. This includes lectures, blackboard complex. Here they are used not for fun, thrills or pleasure, but for the serious business of preparing the high school student to stay alive on todays dangerous and much traveled streets and illustrations of correct driving techniques, driving safety and the Utah Highway regulations to prepare students to pass the written test for a drivers license and to familiarize them with the mechanics of driving and of automobiles. Here they learn the correct procedures on turning, parking, passing, backlong ing up, etc. The classroom segment of the dri- K , r 1 a i f 1 n S - x STUDENTS OF instructor Condies section wind-u- p session on the driving a range. The instructors divide the class between themselves; half driving on the range with Condie from 9 to 11 a.m. and half checking out in the simulator with Smuin during the same time period. During the morning the class works two hour periods alternating between the driving range and the Link driving simulator. Smuin takes half the class to the driving range from 7 to 9 a.m., while Condie checks out his half in the simulator. I try to work it so that no student is in any one car more than two times during his mandatory four hours on the driving range, said Condie. The course, painted on the parking lot, and marked by flourescent orange cones, gives a student practice in just about every driving technique -- - turning, passing, parking, braking and backing. He has room to maneuver around the driving range following the traffic lanes and practicing on the different stations and obstacles. If a student does knock over cones going through the figure eight obstacle, the obnarrow road stacle, or while backing, he must stop the car and place them back into position. This precludes the old trial and error method, with its jerky starts, turns and stops where a student had to feel his way through, try to keep from hitting something and familiarize himself with the car at the same time. If we teach the kids in there just to turn the wheel correctly, hand over handand have them get the feel of driving on the road, using proper driving techniques; then this is an accomplishment, stated Smuin A tape records the minor and fatal mistakes each student makes while driving on the simulated highway and street; this gives the instructor the opportunity to discuss with the student just what he is doing wrong and help corHere a student rect him. hopefully corrects bad habits. Ten cars of every imaginable type and make are kept at the driving range to give students as wide a range of Perhaps one of the best about the driving simulator training is that the student is instinctively taught defensive driving techniques and here he has a chance to make mistakes and learn from them, without damage to himself or his car. The students seat themselves, prepare their machines for the road and wait the instructions and situations presented by the film. The filmed sequence is begun and they speed down a projected road, shown on a screen at the front cf this classroom. Here they hopefully start putting into practice the correct driving techniques learned in class, such as proper passing and turning, and begin to learn how to quickly and correctly react to road situations and emergencies. At first though, they learn already been completed. Students are also required to have two hours practical driving under actual road conditions, four hours on the driving range and eight hours on the simulator before they can qualify to pass the driver education program.
