Practically every one of the activities pictured above may be enjoyed in facilities easily accessible to all, thanks to modern, private transportation, and to the activities of states and provinces and national government in providing for public recreational grounds. Summer-lon- g enjoyment of the outdoors starts in the backyard that is equipped to make this possible. It is stretched by planning boating, swimming parties, and picnics over weekends. It is to be climaxed during the longer periods afforded by vacation time, for camping out in any degree of ruggedness ones tastes dictate; or settling down in a well located resort if it is luxury one seeks. This Special Section is designed to furnish helpful information on whatever one may want to do, how to do it most pleasurably, what products and services are available to make your outdoor recreation perfect. Also emphasized are ways in which all who cherish the wonders of nature and the pleasures of the great outdoors may help to preserve, and to keep clean, and extend our natural resources as well as how to enjoy them more. x That this support should forthcoming would seem to be assured by the increasing number of concerned citbe izens whole families who seek to make existing facilities available and to preserve and extend them for their children. The Good Life Growth of active interest in the Great Outdoors accelerates as more people seek to escape from the tensions of modern life. Their goals are the revitalizing pleasures of leisurely camping, boating, all manner of outfishing door recreation including touring for the sake of visiting and photographing the scenic splendors and the wildlife that constitute a natural heritage. For example, a million families now camp overnight in National Parks. Including sightseers, visitors to the national parks during totalled more than 168 5 1970 mil- lion. Four hundred thousand campers can be accommodated at one time in the National Forests, where provi sion for outdoor sports abound. Add the activity at state parks, maintained almost everywhere, and the growth of public interest is multiplied. In order to accommodate millions who will want to go camping this year, the Department of the Interior again is offering the prized "Golden Eagle Passport. Untouched Ijind Thousands of square miles of this magnificent land have never felt the pressure of highway traffic and the consequent litter brought by travellers; have never been fouled by dirty waters and tainted air. The wildlife in some areas have seldom seen a human, and vast forest reaches have never heard the snarl of the chain saw. Canadas geography has thus far dictated that most Canadians must live, work and play in a narrow populated belt stretching from Atlantic to Pacific, and seldom extending more than 200 miles north of the border. As early as 1956, for the state with travel promotion. in 1970 the federal administration took action to form a single department of environmental control to oversee all pollution control and conservation action at the national body charged the Ontario Water Resources Commission was established to combat water pollution. Instances are not lacking where the provinces on their own, or in cooperation with federal authorities, have vigorously exerted themselves in combatting pollution.
