not notha having registered was no disqualification to ruffice though it would have been better had bad he be registered E 11 clute said lie he was the member ol of the nominating committee who had bad called upon mr ramel and to whom the latter had promised to run and to serve the full fall term if elected mr rumel made no reply judge gilchrist sal he thought no man should be bequir required d to run who did not wish to and moved that the nominating committee be empowered to till all vacancies that may from any cause occur on the ticket prior to elec lion carried H w made a speech in which he be said it was wag believed uy the committee that a good ticket had been selected but it did not by any means include all the good men in the party 1 if any man on the ticket did n not ot wj wish to run he had only to withdraw and it the voters objected to any name on the ticket they had bad but to scratch it off he wanted all to vote without constraint je he charged that there had been no surrender on the part of the peoples party and he be objected to any abal compromise with them until they should make a corn coin surrender government ile he continued with a long and bitter i tirade against tahe mormons cormons Mor mons and the peoples party in his bis familiar style 1 and his hie r remarks marks e were tinged with frith deft defiance 9 towards the wing of the liberal party who were in favor of the fusion though he faid that after the elec election laou he would meet his friends on that side and work with thern them on the old and main issues he urged the liberals to vote and to scratch the ticket as much as they chose JUDGE C W BENNETT said he was never backward in coming forward in so good a cause as this the controversy as to what we should sh do is passed on the one side ide is a mormon and on the other Is 1 i a gentile ticket and you are asked which you will wil I 1 support itis it ia too late to discuss the manner jal in which four gentiles came to be named on the mormon ticket all the talk about trade a boom and business interests does very well to nil fill the bankers vaults but it should not influence men of brains and hearts he believed that tue four gentiles on the f fusion ticket tic liet would lavor putt putting in g down polygamy it if money questions were excluded but it if pecuniary con one should be involved to in the cou contest tesi they would ask for a conference ence committee coin sowe some of his remarks in rie reference ference to the men who favored the f fusion were very caustic he dilated on personal manhood and independence pen dence etc in a manner evidently intended to captivate his bis bearers and then began another tirade against the church control which be alleged had govern governed d in utah and included in his hia cond condemnation meation the fhe proceedings ce edings by which the proposal tor for a luion came to be made and accepted he predicted that the four gentiles in the city council would not be able to te accomplish in the way of good government and that they would be mere figure heads he maintained that the question in utah was not one of money but bat of principle le and said the opponents of the f fusion were accused of standing in the way of the boom but what should they do T they ey had their ticket should h d they stand by it or compromise he was in favor of fighting it out on this line it it takes not only all ail summet summer but years A applause lause he upraised Ep raised ff V W lawrence the candidate for mayor and spoke in high terms af pf f the rest of the men on the ticket and said the ticket meant we dont make any partnership with the church nor the NEWS some say we cant elect the ticket but I 1 dont care for that we will show where we stand he urged the necessity of organization n and a full vote and claimed that I 1 me e liberals lacked only of equaling the reg istra tion of the peoples people s party P L iVILL TANS made the next speech re be said we are not here tonight making explanations or apologies we have nothing to explain or apologize for the liberals had assembled to nominate a ticket and had bad attended to that and it remained for them to go to toe the polls and vote not necessarily with the expectation pec L tation of winning but bat to show their air strength he charged that the party w whom hom the liberals had so long fought was seeking affiliation with them in order to prolong it if a life but but he would never give it an additional brea breath ef life and predicted its early death he closed mith an appeal to the liberals to go to the polls and vote and induce their neighbors to do the sime same that emancipation might be brought to utah etc he would feel delighted to toe be beaten among those who supported the gentile ticket but bot would feel disgraced to win in company with the gentiles supporting the other ticket I 1 S A was the next speaker he dwelt OR OB the progress and prospects ecta of the liberal party up till now and ana had hoped that in two to years more it would 1 win I the entire control of 01 th the city he recounted the part he had taken in connection with the proposal fora for a fusion lusion he could not possibly obligate himself to vote for any par part of a mormon ticket and was opposed to accepting as a favor that which he ought to be allowed to win as a right he denounced the legislature for not passing the municipal bill and the proceedings which resulted in the fusion and referred to governor west as a 6 non taxpayer and a nonvoter non voter he indulged in sarcasm and ridicule at the fusion whick which pleased his hearers bearers immensely he was severe in his condemnation of the majority at the chamber of commerce meet lag and ridiculed their course he held that they could not bind the gentiles Gentile of the city by the action they took he believed that an offer f from rom the mormons cormons Mor mons of a fusion meant no good to the gentiles and read from the san francisco Fraucis ep chronicle of the ath cinat an article it m reference to recent political events in this city which was political loudly audly applauded lie he said gaid it was of vital importance that the f friends of the straight gentile ticket show their full strength and closed by denouncing the fusion as an unholy alliance sidney hudson stood up in the audience and asked why the liberal primaries had bad not noeleen been held at an early day H W lawrence in reply reply explained that the lack of time di did not hot admit of it there were lond load calls tor for norrell governor west and rosborough Kos borough THE GOVERNOR arose to speak the chair seemed reluctant recognize him but at length did so he began in a firm determined ter mined tone by say saying ng that he had come to the meeting in response to a special invitation and was here to defend his bis action meaning his eburne in connection with the fusion ticket A voice in front of him shouted you are not called upon to defend it 11 A great tumult of approval f followed ol 01 this sally during which the governor shouted should la in an excited manne and with vehement gesticulation but I 1 will defend it and snaking shaking his finger at the individual who had made the interruption the governor continued you dont want to hear the defense but you shall hear it and when the honor bonor of myself and those who are with me shall be vindicated such cowards and cravens as you are will quail while the governor was uttering words to this effect the tumult became simply terrific the evident purpose was to prevent the governor from continuing his speech but he be shouted with the greatest excitement and denance 1 I will be heard while I 1 am governor of this territory I 1 will maintain the right of free speech by this time the scene behind the railing and in the front part of the auditorium was one of wild con fusion and terrific uproar men were their arms and shouting for order in a frantic manner we are not slaves sla veal I there are no slaves here 11 11 dont call us cowards and similar exclamations were shouted by excited men in the audience evidently the governor govermor had been understood to apply the word 11 slaves to his opponents whereas no ne did not net use that word at all and the supposition that he did had bad infuriated a large portion of the audience the chairman rapped rap pd d and shouted for order and la ia a lull in the tumult called out ill it the governor calls anybody here a slave again I 1 shall call him to order at this the audience applauded terrifically terrin cally while the governor faced facco the chairman and shaking his hand band towards the latter shouted at the top of his voice 1 I called no one a slave the chairman shouted in reply the chair so understood you the governor with increased excitement exclaimed 1 I deny it 1 called no one a slave I 1 I 1 did not use the word I 1 he then faced the audience but bat the uproar wasso was so great that it was impossible tor for him to proceed and judge gilchrist stepped to his bis side and began urging the assembly to listen to the governor judge gl christ bad spoken some moments and ad appeared to be about to lengthen out his remarks into a speech spee eb when the governor interrupted him by saying judge let me talk you can make your speech afterwards judge gilchrist stood back apologizing apologising to the governor and 1 saying 1 that he be was only trying to secure seare I 1 order the governor tried to proceed with his speech but instantly the uproar drowned his voice there evidently was a strong element in the audience which was determined that the governor should not be heard but the latter waal was equally determined that he would be at times it appeared as it if be was la in danger of personal violence so HO great were the excitement and f fury uy of a portion of the crowd but at such timeo timea the governor stood his bis round ground the embodiment of pluck and fearlessness fg at length Gen connor arose and speaking peaking in as loud a tone as hacord hac oud said aid that lit was well known that he differed governor but he besought the assembly to remember that he was the governor of the territory and the representative of the general 9 government ent and to listen to him gen connors effort calmed the audience sufficiently to allow the governor to commence speaking again which he did in a very calm and mild tone he quickly became warmer however and denounced the dig disposition position which chic the meeting had manifested to deny him the right of free speech and made some caustic remarks on this point he showed that those is in favor of the fusion had courteously listened to a speech froma from a leader ot of the antl anti f fusionists judge bennett who used severe language but was nut not interrupted while no friend of the fusion had bad been given a hearing at either rie meeting riveting eting of their opponents he said it was unusual for the governor of a territory to take part in municipal affairs a fact to which a prominent gentleman bad called his attention during the day but when he was asked to what territory be would like to be sent he chose utah thinking he might be able to make himself a factor in settling the great questions here and he would not shrinkA from the duties of the course he had chosen he thought liberals could never be divided on the main qu question estion here he might resort to personalities as other gentlemen had done and show that some of the gentlemen who opposed the f fusion were receiving I 1 profit and emola emolument from existing conditions which they were anxious to perpetuate tor for their own personal and pecuniary benefit and intimated that they were influenced irks by y mormon gold AV AV T these remarks produced a sensation and considerable confusion the chair asked the governor do you refer to persons who are pies present the governor made an affirmative reply the chair then I 1 call yon to te order sir such a remark remak is out of order governor Is it out of order because it is untrue or because it is in bad taste the chair chait I 1 believe it is both it I 1 certainly is in bad taste governor if it is untrue I 1 will withdraw it but I 1 am rie responsible for the taste of my remarks the governor turning from the chair to the audience declared that certain gentlemen who opposed the fusion had made money out of the existing state ol of affairs here that peace was not to their pecuniary interest and that in the contests that had bad been baen forced on the mormons cormons Mor mons they had been paid mormon gold this created a sensation which was increased when the governor dec deel Hired hied there were witnesses present b whose testimony he could substantiate bis assertion there were calls calad for the witnesses when the thie gornor named mr merritt and mr bennett this was WALS carrying the war into africa and produced a pronounced sensation MY MT merritt stood up lind and began speaking but the governor interrupted him by asking aking fia it if he had not been paid large tees fees by the mor mar mons he answered affirmatively but insisted that as he had been called as a witness he must be allowed to tell the whole truth he then proceeded to explain that the money he be had received was la in payment for his legal servi services making special reference to the cases in which the governors right to appoint certain officers was contested the money had bad been paid to him by the chairman of the central committee of the peoples party but he had never rec received dived a dollar from the mormon church the governor then called upon mr air bennett wao admitted admits d that he had been paid fees by mormons cormons Mor mons but never except for legitimate services i as an attorney lie he added that he be deemed it his duty to defend a client charged with crime and would even defend the governor who like other men was liable to get into a serape scrape laughter continuing his speech the governor said that be was an attorney himself and considered it perfectly legitimate to take fees as the gentlemen had done and would himself have done the same under similar circumstances but he be did not consider it legitimate politics to seek to perpetuate af afi public condition for the sake of getting fees out of it there was waa further confusion created lay ey the governors remarks and an individual behind the |
