Show NECESSITY OF graduation ox ON thursday last we offered some comments upon mutual improvement societies li making raking a few strictures regarding the tae condition of quite a number of them as we under understand staid it the chief reason for the lack of system md and thoroughness characteristic of not a few of these organizations is owing to the instructions of the general super intend eucy lind and their aids having been more inore or less ignored 1 where they have been most closely adhered to the beneficial effects are apparent A closer application of them will produce 8 more general advancement I 1 those associations should to a large extent prepare young loung men mell to receive and intelligently discharge the duties qa the priesthood in tuat mat direction they occupy the position of ailsto aids to that thai body and can lay lav the foundation lor for graduation gi ad nation in its offices the gospel is a science and its pr principles i sciples can an only be grasped and its duties and obligations effectively discharged by degrees it is inconsistent to presume that a person can leap into a manipulation of the higher branches of mathematics who has haa not yet grasped the fundamental principles of artith so it is absurd to presume that young men can vault suddenly enly from a position of crudity for want of experience and depth ox ot ginto the higher e r establish bligh offices of an organization esta established ed by divine command this proposition based upon sound philosophy makes it that young men should unless it be in exceptional cases graduate in the gospel school to lo suddenly denly confer the offices of the higher priesthood upon youths who have never occupied any previous and lesser responsibility is the antipodes of the gr grading acting system which should be the rule and not the exception A strong effort was made some borne years ago by the first presidency and twelve to have this ides idea t thoroughly ho roughly acted upon large numbers of youths 5 buths were ordained deacons and quorums ot of that grade of the lesser priesthood were organized in accordance with revelation on the subject in many instances bt ances however these organizations aie ai e practically dead and the afie duties of are performed pei formed by men ot 01 advanced years by appointment the reason assigned in some instances tor for this thia practical abolition of the deacon has been that it lias hab been difficult to get the young men to perform the necessary labor and the meetings gb of the deacons quorums have fallen into dis su etude in such cases the reasons for the falling failing away should be ascertained asaei tamed with a view of providing a i emedy Y it tile the young men are left to glide along without receiving any special care or attention their slackness is easily accounted lor where the bishops and other leading men take a careful carelus and fatherly interest in bleir inee tings and labors it will be found that the organizations izat ions are alive aud efficient in the quorums the lord has pro v eded vided a system for foi mutual improve ment that is not excelled by any other under heaven if the meetings are not appropriated to that tha purpose and the transaction of needful business Dusine bh they are not being devoted to the use for which the lord loid intended they should je be not only should they the be made the means of obtaining information regarding reg aiding the duties obligations atia and responsibilities of the priesthood but also aloo ot of the claws and customs of nations and all subjects of profit and enlightenment the studies conversation inflections and interchange of thought need not be confined in their religious bearing to the duties of the particular grade which the quorum occupies but to 10 the as a whole mall its phases in meetings of newly organized young deacons quorums qu those composing anem tire are apt to be at sea tor for lack ack of excellence in relation to how they aey should proceed if proper care caie is a taken to have them instructed put to work and directed in proper channels of thought and res research ciuch under the direction of the bishops by men of tn intelligence t ellgen ce and experience the probability b i lit is t that h t they will become interested and active otherwise they will lag the quorums will sicken and languish k we repeat that the quorums of every grade can be made a wonderful power luthe in the direction of advancement in intelligence telli gence lence and practical utility in carrying forward every branch of the work of god A good deal of progress has been made in that line of late years how much it can be increased is an important consideration the end is not to be achieved by devoting the meetings to mere desultory expressions pres of sentiment it will be lound found that when such a coue is pursued a very few I 1 me meiji ra more voluble than the j e A ap pr te sometimes in a way tar from profitable an extremely heavy portion of the time definite lines ot et thought study and conversation are much wore more preferable and efficient it is also a a good plan to have always on hand books which come in good place for reading and reference let it be kept in mind that the gif gifts ts of of the gospel and its powers are not separate from effort and that the pursuit of pure intelligence telli gence is the noblest object of existence especially when the ultimatum is its application for the amelioration of the race returning to the necessity for graduation in religious matters it may muy be accepted as correct that those who go upon the lower rounds of the ladder of progress are in a position to be familiar with all the details connected with the path they have trodden odden ti in goina below all things like the great master when a higher point is reached all things under that degree of elevation are comprehended he who skips s k ip suddenly to a great official altitude I 1 is not likely to be in possession of that experience which enables him to direct intelligently all things legitimately within tile the scope of his extended jurisdiction I 1 the principle of graduation more liberally applied will obviate the ne for foi the more moie violent processes of evolution there mast needs be in the dealings of we the almighty in regard to his work an evolving operation in unison with the eternal fitness ol of things it may proceed slowly but bat its progress will be as unerring as the workings woi kings of the law of gravitation and attraction if stumbling blocks block in the path of the progress of the the work of redemption demp tion are not removed in one way the they willbe will be in some other and every 1 intelligent ea being will in course of time or at least ja in eternity find his proper position |
