missionary MAT TEAS IN TUB THE SOUTH LEE VALLEY tenn july 1886 editor deseret news all things considered the dorkof work of the missionaries is is progressing quite favorably A recent letter from elder E S kimball indicates that such is the case throughout the entire mission w while hile the health of the elders continues good there is some chills amongst ai them in mississippi however elder shaw of that conference being released to go to his home in ogden on that account I 1 believe he leaves chattanooga today to day elder kimball also of a still more recent date writes very encouragingly of his labors at and lebanon where ne he is holding one and two meetings per week elders perkins and daybell were at the time idith him but contemplated tem plated leaving tor for their nelds fields of labor on the ath dinst the interest manifested at lebanon is of such a nature as to induce elder K to indulge strong hopes of touch good being tile the result Eld elder james erJames writes july 15 from quiz putnam county he is still in company with elder H K perkins they have made some little ro gress in the way of holding meetings I 1 hardly suppose affairs with them to be as placid as a silver lake as he says that ne he has ha received an anonymous letter to 11 11 I 1 neglected mentioning in my last the baptism of a lady in this neighborhood this occasion is one of importance to the elders any how as it will vastly conduce to their comfort om fort while the influence will be felt in pro the good of the cause speaking akine of baptism I 1 have it that during an after dinner ceat in this neighborhood engaged in by a methodist circuit rider eider and a deist the subject turned upon baptism when toe tile deist asked the rev kev why christians observe baptism toe the rev kev replied that it was an ordinance of the church and one of the essential examples laid down by christ for his followers to observe either by sprinkling pouring or immersion as may be chosen by the candidate water baptism t being the symbol of johns baptism of christ in the river jordan how olten often was christ baptized by john once is all we have any account of well you methodists should postpone any more baptizing till you find out what baptism is whether pouring or sprinkling only oraa ong method can be the baptism baptis M of john sud and if the bible Is not plain ou that subject you need some prophet t to i enliven TOU go W the cannot afford a live prophet I 1 would su suggest est that you borrow one from the agest gg cormons mormons Mor armons mons 1 1 I know I 1 was talking to a mormon 11 norare nor are you I 1 am further from being a mormon than you ire are you pretend to believe the bible while I 1 do not do you eo down and talk to the Mor mormon moD el elders go rs ask them about any subject you please and they will prove it to you from froin the bible which you so pretend to believe but they will pick about and skip about well cant you pick and skip too you may pick and skip as muan as you please and it if any mormon you meet man woman or child cannot answer your questions as fast as you can ask them proving their answers from the bible I 1 will give you a horse and if they cannot in one hours time ask you more scriptural questions than you can answer in a mouth month I 1 will give you another horse the domine concluded probably that the deist was poking f fun un at him hi iw so BO he be solaced himself with a quid ol oi tobacco and dropped the subject this deist is the only oue one in a this neighborhood an every little while has occasion to put in a shot which he be does in favor oi oc the mormons Mor mons 11 he tells those who defame elders that are ir consistent inconsistent a if they ieliene ie lieve the bible they ought to be mormons cormons Mor mons because if tile bible is true the M amons are right it is my melan cholly d duty ty to announce the death on the dinst i of sister elizabeth lindsay relict of the late
