zina bennion has had supervision over the normal department of the college thirty students or of this i department have been admitted free of charge this privilege being given through an appropriation made by we general board of education those to whom this advantage has been offered have agreed to certain necessary requirements their written statements of promises uro mise with signatures being now kept on file by the undersigned undersigner under signed nearly all the normal students have followed either the junior or the senior course of pedagogical study with a view to graduating sa an teachers tea chera eight have graduated in the senior course and nineteen in the junior their certini cates issued to them this day will entitle on them to receive the general board licenses for teaching in the primary and intermediate grades re ively of the church school service of those completing the senior course four through previous scholastic attainments have baba aole to pass in one year both of the pro scribed ascribed courses I 1 would recommend that the normal course be extended so as to include the work of three years higher branches of 0 logical instruction being added with tile the necessity ot of gaining the spirit of true devotion to god our regular m monthly fat fast meetings and our class tesij testimony mony meetings in all of which the students have borne most striking volun tuy monies monie bave shave kept this spirit alive and have tended to prevent the bestowal of the entire attention upon the dead letter of the law opportunity has also been given tor valuable lectures on the book of mormon delivered by elder george reynolds similar lectures have been delivered in the second term on bible evidences Evid encee 1 by elder david mckenzie and on church Jb history 11 by elder B H roberts to these theme three brethren our heartiest moots ments and thanks ate aie due for their able and disinterested efforts forta ef special attention has ban been paid in all theology classes to evidences from reason of the truth of the gospel honor has ban been shown us in regard to foreign missions mlee ions two young men ol of the academic department thomas L woodbury and fred C Res reseller have already departed on missions mie to tile society islands in response to calls made in january of this year in december of last laet year heber C iverson anti and john H R hubbard of the normal department were called to the southern states but in consideration of their desire to complete the senior normal course their departure was wae postponed until the of the present month in may ot this year edwin C dibble of the normal department received a call to the sandwich islands islando for which field of labor he will depart in the near future 14 Instructions careful thoughtful and prayerful preparation miss Bannion Benn ionn lis influence over the ladles ladies has baa been decidedly benefic larl and it is with deep regret that we witness the severance of her heir connection with the college in her capacity of advisory physician dr romania B pratt has given valuable assistance to the lady superintendent besides delivering a course of lectures on the subject of hygiene for women the ladies or the institution have been given equal opportunities with the other sex aex of taking part in practical exercises the subject of women ij rights has received thorough recognition here the bithe singing has been in the efficient hands ot prof jos joe J daynes his hia efforts have been to make the demoen of his bis class good readers reader of music in both the tonic sol fa and the staff notation the former being recognized as very valuable either by itself or as a preparation for the latter his labor has baa been extremely successful ou u 1 difficult musical selections written in either system are read at sight eight by the student As before the school singing has been cou grega tl thomas L woodbury of the academic department acted as singing conductor until he was called away when his place was taken by malcolm mckinnon Kinnon Mo of the normal department miss Owen gwendolin dolin lewis of the academic department a actea c sted ski aa officers of the Y M M L 1 A of the salt lake stake this course of training was conducted at the beginning ot of the second term 62 young men being in attendance at the dismissal of this class it was thought wise wine to favor the officers of the Y L M 1 I A of the stake this thin course extended through three weeks and was attended by 64 young ladies the presence of these special students has exerted a 2 beneficial influence in the institution we feel sure that they have received great benefit through their attendance they have testified of this advantage in their various while excel lent leat results have followed in many ways from these courses we feel it will not be advisable to repeat them next year under our conditions of building and faculty the regular instructors exclusive of engage a 8 greater number of regular instructors as the teachers have found themselves in many costs cases overburdened with duties and thereto therefore re unable to specialize as they would have liked I 1 trust this will be remedied next year in december of last year it was decided to publish a periodical in the interest of the college this to be conducted by the students and to form a repository for the most creditable productions duct duc ions tiona of the students in their various classes accordingly the first number of the idea was issued in january 1898 1893 and the publication
