Show FROM THE SOUTHERN STATES elders eldera N P jensen of spanish pork fork and J C ferrin of eden called at the news newa office last evening having just juat returned irom from a mission to the southern states elder jentien left his hia nome home for the mission field my eth 1891 his hia field of labor jay in the north kort alabama conference chena he remained during his entire absence irom utah heen he en loyed his hia mission very much and generally experienced cooj health his hie treatment at the hands of the people was waa the best beat aud and he made numerous friends and succeeded in allaying much prejudice the follo following winic report of his hie labors and experiences was furnished by elder forrin ferrin I 1 left my home on may 3rd ard 1891 to fill a mission to u the southern states and on arriving at chattanooga team was assigned to the kentucky conference at that time there were four elders laboring in that state one was released having filled at an honorable mission of two years and C J H worthen of salt bait lake city john T giles of heber city and myself joined the three remaining elders as their traveling companions with satchels in hand we started out in the endeavor to sow some of the seeds ot of righteousness in the hearts of the good kentucky people but it was with a discouraging outlook so far as prospective baptisms were concerned at that time since then various changes have taken place five elders in eluding clouding myself have been released each having filled a two years mission minion six others other have been released for various causes one being transferred to the northwestern states mission taking all things into consideration I 1 think the elders have done remarkably well several new countries have been opened up A great deal of prejudice concerning the latter day saints has been eradicated from the minds of the people and the elders elder have made many friends who will long be remembered by them six persons have been baptized and three children blessed eseed bl quite a number of people are investigating the gospel more baptisms are anticipated soon there have been ton ten elders at work in tb this to state during the last summer and most moat of the winter but owing to sickness and other causes several changes have been made which have diminished the number of elders in the conference there being only six at work at present it to Is expected how ever thal tha the vacancies will be filled up about the of this month some people are still very much prejudiced against the elders and the principles taught by them while many are simply indifferent paying but very little attention to them in any way there to is another class of people in kentucky who are worthy of praise for their houses are open their tables spread and the elders made welcome to them any time they wish to come it seems that they take pleasure in doing good and providing for the humble servants of god when they come in from a long and tedious jour ney and the lord will not forget them I 1 have enjoyed my labors very much during my absence although my health has not been as good the last year as was desirable but am glad to have the privilege of returning home under as favorable circumstances as I 1 find myself in at the pre preset sett time I 1 arrived at ogden city on the dinst with A company ot of immigrants from the southern states we had a very pleasant journey with the exception of a slight accident that cocu occurred while crossing the divide in colorado on the C M B R B R A large rook rock of about three tons weight rolled down an embankment ban kment and lodged on one side of the track we were close to where it fell and the engineer although he saw it coming was unable to stop his bis train until it had bad struck the rock damaging the engine and mail and baggage oar car so that th y had bad to be set on a side track another engine was sent for and took us safely through no one was hurt the saints on board all felt to acknowledge the hand band of providence in their preservation the train men eX expressed Dressed their great astonish ment at the wonderful escape of the train and its occupants |
