Show CHURCH historical DATES an esteemed correspondent writing about a little pamphlet entitled tem pies ancient and modern lop issued from the NEWS office a little more than a year ago calls ioor to what he considers a mistake in a date the caage rt r barred to is found on page 14 and reade reada on july 23 1833 the sam aade day in which their brethren were expelled from jackson county the corner stones of the kirtland temple were were laid our correspondent brother daniel saye say the fact la is the saints were not expelled from jackson county until october 13 1833 the great event in connection therewith was the falling of ahtaris on the night following the day to corroborate my statement of the sea season solD I 1 will quote the following lines written by judge at the time many thousand pounds at hand they robbed from the printer then drove the saints from of off their land to perish in the winter according to the historical documents at hand lyman wight and others on the of july 1883 the ame amme day on which the corner stones ot ol the kirtland kinland temple were laid aid signed an agreement with the leaders leaden of the mob that part of the saints should leave the country before the first day at the next ye arand the remainder be re moved before april it may not be inadmissible to consider nelder oo the actual date of the expulsion as the one on OB which this agreement was signed although the real exodus took place later and covered more thun one day the saints as is well known were not f left alone to carry olit ob t the agreement entered upon at various times they were cruelly assaulted by mobs led sometimes by professed ministers of the gospel until the final departure depar tuie occurred the meteoric incident erroneously referred to by brother tyler as having happened bapp happ ered on the or of october occurred on the of november the same year early in the morning and the phenomenon is said to have been so remarkable that many spectators concluded that the day of judgment was was at hand band by the courtesy of elder bider franklin D richards the church historian the NEWS has obtained the following additional facts relating to the jackson county expulsion on july 1838 the printing establishment of W W phelps at independence pen dence was destroyed by a mob and edward partridge and charles allen alien were cruelly maltreated mal treated on the public square three day a later slater the agreement to which we have referred was signed but the mob being unable to wait until the time agreed upon continued their relentless persecutions on the night of october they demolished ten dwellings west of big blue and threatened pelted belted and beat those who could not escape fast enough on the nighton night of november ast 1st an attack was made on a branch twelve or fourteen miles west at independence the same night the mob throw threw stones atones and brickbats brick bats at houses occupied by saints and partly pulled down A S gilberts dwelling while others broke into gilbert whitney s store and add scattered the goods in the streets poles were also thrust through the shutters and windows the following day nov 2nd and the vandalism was continued an attack was made upon a branch at the blue six milea from the village where loois were torn down houses broken into and several persons derson severely beaten on nov ath a collision occurred near the blue in wiloh persons were wounded three fatally th tally this was about sunset the same evening i gilbert and four other bre brethren toren were sent to jail but gilbert morley and corrill were liberated almost immediately and returned in the morning W E mckellin Mc Mo Lellin was wae one of the pris amers nere in the morning nov jtb the mob gathered gathe intending inte to murder the imprisoned saints gun were fired for the purpose pour four prisoners were set free about sunrise u orise later bater in the day the arms were demanded and promptly surrendered and the be brethren gave themselves elves up for trial but this was not what the mob looked for they had no regard for the law or the courts but broke into the houses of the saints telling them V tn flee or their houses would be demolished and the inmates massacred matters having reached this crisis on the nights night of november ath and ath women and children fled bed to the prairies or to the banks of the missouri river the mob hunted the disarmed men and fired upon some bome of them others were captured tied up and severely beaten on november ath the shores of the river were lined with men women and children goods wagons and provisions the rain all the time descending in torrents the following day the expelled saints commenced felling falling cottonwood trees to make log jog cabins the conclusion from these authentic data is that the exodus which was agreed to on the same day the corner stones of the kirtland temple were laid was not an accomplished fact until the early part of november 1833 instead of in the middle of october as brother tyler sayf yet there can be nothing but a technical objection to dating the expulsion from july as is done in the pamphlet referred to |
