Show RATHER MIXED UP the joint oily city and county building committee held a meeting friday principal object of which was an effort to lo adjust we the differences existing between contractor J H bowman and the chief ollief subcontractor sub contractor contractors klou houlahan Houlah laban aD griffiths and morris it that mr bowman has been paid for the work as aa it pro greceo gree aeu the city and county retaining 10 per cent cents anu he be in turn paid the auti suti contractors the payments being made on estimates of the architects a aa to the be amount ot work doue done at berday days le meeting mr griffiths claimed that there here was something like worth of work done for which his bis firm had not dot been paid mr bowman however tio wever declared deo lareu that there was wag not move more than due the aul aou contract tractors and offered to submit the matter ou OLA an examination ot the building and the estimate arrived at from such examination the parties could not be on this thin point but mr griffiths abdou andou announced aced that if the matter could be so arranged as to insure the payment of money due them as work progressed in the future and securing also the sum in controversy whatever it might be they bey would go ahead mr bowman met tills this by giving the sub sab contractors on tractors an order on the committee for any sums that might be due them so as the work progressed this of course would take the payment out of the hands bands of the contractor altogether and was considered a very fair proposition but mr griffiths did not think it secured him for the sum in controversy and a long discussion followed mayor baskin explained to the sub contractors that such an order would insure the prompt payment ot of every thing that might be due them in the future and as the city and county retained 10 per cent from mr bw man main which would amount to some thing like when the building was fl finished dished they hey would won id be reasonably sure eure of getting the sum aum in controversy from that 1 the contractor conceded to mr griffiths everything pos possible sirle but the latter finally coDel concluded that nothing but the payment of the sum involved would ans that being absolutely refused he announced that he would norgo not go on with the work and withdrew from the room followed ly by L y mr morris mr bowman then stated that he would have to the contract and the business was waa proceeded with in order expedite the work the contractor asked that the committee hereafter make the payments to employee emp loyes and mater material lal men direct and this was practically agreed to juige loufbourow and selectman morris were appointed as a committee to arrange the details suit anil report at another meeting to be held early next week we k A claim of for the granite volumna which were ordered when the were changed was vas allowed allo afa a suit had been omm 0 mm rice i the 1 contract cr ur for that amount so we the calesta cape stands ds at this juncture |
