Show THE democratic WIGWAM the great structure in which the democratic national convention is to te be held is ia one of those feats of rapid building for which the lake city Is noted perhaps in no other place would so great a task have been undertaken on a pled pledge a to have it completed and property pro properly perfy appointed within so short a time the nature of the case was such euch that hurried work had bad to be done and this an and other dother circumstances combined to make chicago the point for holding the convention convent lori although previous to the meeting of the national committees of the two parties it had made no bid to them nor they to it for the reason that it already had the worlds fair and that was considered honor and prominence enough for at least one decade thy manner in which the consummation named was brought about Is s told in an intel inter resting manner by a recent number of the chicago times while admitting that the reason for the choice of that city by some of the committee may have been the fact that it has such great railway and hotel facilities and that long experience had fully qualified it for the satisfactory entertainment of any number of guests it is still claimed that the primal reason was because greatness is thrust upon some cities just as it is upon some men and chi chicago CS g 0 is a conspicuous 08 ins instance ta nce of the former it is also stated as a fact that the national convention felt that a candidate placed in nomination there would start off in the race with a peculiar prestige a certain indefinable and favoring Iri influence fluence which no other city could impart st lous lou hoodooed hoodoo ed us in 1888 said one and he be express expressed eA the views of many in 1884 grover cleveland had been and other cities made a gallant fight for it and chicago did what she bhe could to help along to realization the aspirations of her neighboring city on the lake the latter city was wae obreen it had been a hot fight milwaukee supporters up portera more persistent than any others stuck by her to the last four tn teen ballots were taken on the first chicago had one milwaukee 8 kansas city 18 that was the highest vote Mis massouris souris second city received on the eighth ballot indianapolis lB received 22 and on the eleventh milwaukee received the same number future vision visions of the campaign that hao had begun the day the convention con venton ended its labors nor did it end till thi the grand victory of november reflections such as ae these could only result out one way on the fifteenth ballot chicago received twenty seven votes and was wae declared the winner but the local democracy now that it had its prize did not know what to do with it the old exposition building famous for its national conventions and especially notable as the place tin in which was named the successful baand ard bearer in 1884 as well as the de feared knight from bar harbor in that same eventful year had been ordered razed to the groundland ground and its destruction would be complete before convention time but the convention was coming and inythe ing the auditorium would result in providing seats all the other cities had bad agreed to sittings for no less leaf than the auditorium was declared out of the question 80 the committee of arrangements determined ter mined to build a hall for the especial accommodation of the conventions L ich would flews 0 not less lea than people to more effectively carry forward the great undertaking the committee of arrangements appointed two other committees finance and building the next great consideration was raising the necessary money and dc ing it without loss of time it being estimated that would be required altogether with the building complete and equipped it was considered and reasonably that the sales of tickets would return the expenses of the con az tre 1 N mry ap n INTERIOR OF THE WIGWAM there were 60 votes in the committee 26 necessary necee eary to ft a choice there was wae a deadlock and no way to open I 1 it seemed at hand then brice carlisle gorman and henri watterson Wat tereon got together to talk over of a committee of arran arrangements arrange with judge john P alt altgeld as chairman chair maD james 0 strain j j secretary and A F beeberger treasurer the committee located its head quarters qu
