Show THE YOUNG MEMORIAL there was a meeting of the brigham young memorial association at the office of president woodruff on saturday the members present were president wilford woodruff joseph F smith james sharp george Q cannon D H cannon james H moyle ludge judge smith captain willard young frank Y taylor T W jennings mrs susie Y Yates Mrs rs nettle nettie Y snell T G webber heber M wells COST OF THE MEMORIAL the committee on statue submitted the following report lion hon james sharp chairman general committee brigham young memorial association your special committee on statue beg leave to report that they have adopted as i the he gener general al plan of the brigham young memorial statue the design submitted b by mr C E dallin a rough sketch of whiz which is given herewith the general idea taken from the gambetta Gam beita monument re bently erected in paris france la is to make not simply a statue of president i young but rather a monument to the pion pioneers aers with president young as the I 1 central or crowning figure 1 the base of the monument 10 feet high is to be of granite the shaft or column 20 feet high is too be of white oolitic sand asna stone with a pioneer group cut in has bas relief on tb the e face the statue of president young 10 feet high is to be of bronze as are also the sitting sitting figures 8 feet high at the base of the a shaft aft on the face there is to be a bronze tablet giving briefly such data concerning president young as may be decided upon on the back there to is to be a similar bronze tablet giving the names of the pioneers and the date of their entrance into the valley 4 mr C E dallin has offered to furnish and put in place all the bronze work and t to do the stone cutting on the bas relief pioneer group for the sum of we believe this to be a reasonable figure and we therefore recommend that mr bahns damns offer be accept edwith the understanding gt however that the models of the figures and the details of the tha whole design shall be e first approve dby this committee the execution of the whole work should be under the general superia tendency of mr dallin but it t will be necessary for the committee to employ an architect to get out the drawings for the stonework and then to contract for the execution of the stonework as designed your committee now respectfully ask for authority to do this the cost of the he whole monument including all items of expense except the site will your committee estimate be i i under under WILLARD YOUNG chairman J H MOYLE secretary on motion of judge smith the report was approved sud and the committee on statue authorized to execute a coni con i tract with mr dallin as specified and to attend to the carrying out of the recommendations of said report to lo detail THE SITE suggested bUG the committee on lo 10 location loaa tion submitted the following report which was unanimously adopted SALT LAKE CITY utah february 12 1892 to the chairman and general committee on the memorial statue to the isabee latof president brigham young gentlemen your committee on location has carefully considered the ity of several sitti site s for the proposed statue among them one immediately opposite east of the temple upon east temple street another in the vicinity of the eagle gate date and still another on president youngs private cemetery and lastly the southeast corner of the ample temple block after carefully considering the whole of these sites it is the unanimous opinion of your committee that the last ment mentioned mantione ione viz the southeast corner of the temple block is a site in every way suited to the requirements of the monument we therefore recommend that this last mentioned site be selected provided of course the consent of the cy of the church can be obtained irwill it will not be necessary in this report to elaborate upon the addan ages of the other sites these points can be discussed orally when the whole of the committee meet and this report has been presented respectfully THOMAS G WEBBER ORSON F WHITNEY ANDREW KIMBALL YOUNG THOMAS W JENNINGS JEN NINaS L G GRADY committee on location on motion of mr J H moyle the committee was instructed to solicit from the first presidency consent to erect the statue statta on the site indicated TO RAISE FUNDS mr frank Y taylor reported that a subcommittee had bad been appointed from the committee on organization with a view to soliciting names from various counties in Territory the tha to act as agents for collecting of funds and that the absence of their chairman mr F 8 richards in washington had deterred the work mr james sharp president of the association stated that within the next itty sixty days his time would be very much occupied and suggested that it would be agreeable to him if some assistance were rendered him in the discharge of his autlee thereupon on motion of mr james H moyle captain willard young was appointed vice president of the association |
