Show KILLED IN THEIR BEDS editor deseret news salt lake city utah dear sir in the august 80 issue esaue of the tribune I 1 noticed an article headed killed in their beds the article purported to be copied from the san francisco examiner of the loth of august it gave an account of the murder of a R richard belland his family living near st ceorge 3 eorge utah no clue to the mur derera could be found but the nib n ib seemed to hint that as mr bell and his hill family were bitter op posers to the mor mons and every mormon interest the mormons cormons bad done the horrible deed deed we have been looking for any news in the DESERET NEWS or the herald concerning this alleged murder but have failed to see any it seems seema rather strange to say aay the least that a salt lake paper should copy news from a san francisco paper concerning events occurring so near at home and then offer the same as news jf if it is worth your while please answer through your columns yours truly J J A FREMONT utah sept 10 1891 11 IN answer to fur ur correspondent we will B s y the article referred to was concocted like many other auti mor imor mon sensations for foreign consumption it was sent to papers east and west but the I 1 horrible tale was never told iu in utah because means were close at band to test its veracity of cou course ree the tribune reproduced eded it although it was stale and baseless because it helped to keep up the impression that life and property are unsafe in utah and thus of course capital would be encouraged and the material interests of the territory would be advanced copying particulars of an alleged utah murde from a california paper ten days day old ld maybe may be a mark of journalistic entera prise to people here it looks more like a strained effort to malign the cormons mormons Mor mons sl and keep up the absurd prejudices that prevail against them if our correspondent will examine the EVENING NEWS of august or the semiweekly SEMI WEEKLY of september em ber let he will find a refutation of the bell story suggested by the ap pear bearance pe arance anoe of the same piece of fiction in the philadelphia press the officers of the law here both federal and local investigated the report and found nothing to justify it they stated their belief that it was without any foundation in fact it is a matter of regret that such falsehoods find their way into respect able newspapers and very shameful to those dealers in ela slander uder that reproduce them knowing they are manufactured horrors the whole design bet being ng the misrepresentation of a peaceable and law abiding community it may seem strange to our correspondent that such stuff should be copied from abroad its as news at home but it to is a common device of the paper referred to when as an excuse for origin al vilification of the mormons cormons Mor mons |
