ENGINEER the city engineer reported that was due mccornack mo me for constructing a masonry gate and screen chamber for city creek waterworks water works and recommended that the same be placed on the appropriation list appropriated the same officer reported that hines auer succeeded in sinking the well near liberty park to a depth of feet when the casing gave way and the work had to be stopped no water had been obtained and a balance of was waa due the contractors the total being 1464 1454 adopted the same officer called attention to the necessity of providing iron covers for the stone granted that the burton barton gardner company be allowed to extend a 2 inch pipe to their yard for protection in case of tire fire that the petition of wm price for the extension of the water mains be not granted adopted STREET IMPROVE improvements KENTS the committee on streets recommended that an inexpensive guard fence be constructed on south temple street for two and one half blocks east of state that the utah central be required to put ninth south street between seventh and ninth east in proper condition that the petition of the salt lake city railroad company for permission to lay a single track switch to ao the west porch of the warm springs bath house be not dot granted that a foot bridge be constructed across the canal ou ninth west and first south streets that fifth street from I 1 to J be repaired at once that the proposition of W H remington to pave curb and gutter the intersection of first south and state street with strad mant mastic cement be accepted ne the committee also reported that the city engineer had been instructed to prepare six ordinances covering the six paving districts defined in the resolution offered by mr james and recommended that notices of intention to pave district no 1 state street and district no 2 east temple street be published as soon as the same became a law the committee further burthe r reported that they had examined profiles submitted for street and sidewalk grades on south temple first south second south third south west temple first west second west third west fourth west east temple first east and second fast east streets and recommended their approval mayor scott called mr cohn cob n to the chair tools took the floor and stated that when the bonds now ordered old shall have been disposed of the bonding capacity of the city would be reduced to less jew than of this amount had bad been de banded by the board of education when their request was granted the borrowing capacity of the city would not reach to pave the streets with that amount of money was out of the question the city intended doing work this year that they could not do last year but now all was frustrated by the paving districts I 1 and 2 be stricken out on motion of hall the suggestion was adopted equalization REPORT the board of equalization and review appointed to bear objections to the assessment and levy of a special tax for i constructing sidewalks in districts nos NOB 1 2 4 and 13 reported recommending I 1 that the tax levied against i feet fronting on first south street and belonging to E 13 wicks be cancelled as there was now an asphalt walk there there had been no other objections filed and the committee recommended that assessments set got forth la in the list as corrected be confirmed adopted an ordinance was passed confirming the assessment of the lots abutting upon both sides of second south street from second east to eighth east on both sides of first south from east net temple eichnor reported an ordinance requiring prisoners to perform labor when ordered by the court pawing passing sentence the ordinance provides that any person sentenced to imprisonment for violating any ordinance of the city may be ordered by the court passing sentence to perform labor on the public works of the city during the term of such imprisonment but no do prisoner shall be required to perform to locate a water tunnel near dear the head of emigration pipe line at some oine point that when constructed on proper grade it will tap the underground flow of water at it a depth of about twenty
