Show SMALL HILL controversy the special dispatch J to the standard from atlanta ga containing the sen rational sat ional letter sent bent out by sam small t the american people relative to his bis and transactions with the university in this city proved one of the most interesting topics on the street yesterday toe the main expressions show the disgust in which the reverend is held many considered that after such a vituperative attack they were ready to believe what had been intimated of him expressions too strong to be used in print were heard frequently and add it la Is evident that small has baa made no DO friends in ogden by this last effort of his bis his expressions pres relative to ogden created widespread indignation social and church circles feel scandalized and members do not hesitate in giving vent to their feelings on the subject A reporter of the standard called on rev J wesley JWesley hill yesterday afternoon he found him in his library with his wife rev bev mr jayne and another gentleman being present mr hill complained a little of the publication as he be considered it altogether uncalled for but he stated 1 I have become doused soused so used to the jhb sting of this hornet that it falls fails to cause any swell 11 1 1 ing have you anything to say in relation to this letter of asked the reporter 1 1 I dont donit don it think you want to nay may anything in the papers interposed his wife you have said all you care to well answered mr hill 1 I do not wish to say that I 1 have nothing to say for I 1 have a good dealto say and will say it but riot not to the papers I 1 have been drawn into this matter without my seeking it would only lower myself wore were I 1 to notice such a bontem ati ble ve letter I 1 am not onterial on trial mr small is and has virtually pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him by failing to appear before the court when summoned here he is the party charged and the charges may be found in the flies files of the Stan standard dareL he has nut not replied to them when he makes make any specific charges giving dates and proofs it is time to answer and I 1 will then le be ready read y for him I 1 am a member of the new england conference in good standing he threatened to have me turned out of the ministry but failed to make any impression on the conference in view of these things and the fact that our conre conference rence begins june 3rd ard when the matter will be taken up and thoroughly sifted I 1 to du not think it wise for me to say anything about the matter there to is my presiding elder pointing to mr jayne you can talk to him if he be han ban anything to say mr jayne thus appealed ppe aled to said 1 I dont know that I 1 can say anything further than that the board has full confidence in brother hill and that the trustees have returned him for another year you might show him those resolutions addressing mr hill and he can we see tor for himself mr hill produced the following resolutions which were passed at a recent meeting of the church board whereas the time for lor the convening of the annual con conference conf ferAnce ernce is near at hand and whereas our pastor rev J wesley weale hill has served us faithfully and arang grandly building up our church spiritually numerically and otherwise promoting its interests in a manner of which we feel proud therefore be it resolved that we the official board of the first methodist episcopal church 0 01 ogden in appreciation of such meritorious work on his part do hereby earnestly s tl pray the presiding bishop of the ea said ig annual annual conference soon to be held in ogden for his return to his charge tt resolved that these resolutions be made a part of the minutes of this board and that a copy of the same be delivered to the presiding officer of the annual conference aforesaid I 1 it is not so much what Is suld said about rne me remarked mr hill as the fact he be smalls well known men and reputable citizens of ogden slandering their character and bringing against them libelous belous ll and criminal charges also that this action of his destroys the good work so far done and the confidence at one time existing in relation to our university this letter sent broadcast has done ogden thousands of dollars of injury to rae me it appears appers as if his whole aim is to divert attention from himself and stir up the mud while he disappeared I 1 have several letters recently received receive ti inquiring about small and giving grounds for considering him wholly unreliable flable mr hill showed several of these letters from prominent men in atlanta one of these stated that small had left much indebtedness in that city he had bad been given many on promises none of which he kept the letter asked for information regarding the blue and the grey this thie had reference to an attempt made by small while on a lecturing tour in ohio to raise a fund for the erection of a monument to the blue and grey at atlanta georgia where he represented ground bad been dna donated ted for that pu purpose no ground it is if stated was ever secured and the thing proved a fizzle apparently after money had been collected the letter spoke poke i of him as one belonging to that class generally found among all women of both sexes and was a scorcher in itself mr hill also gave the reporter access to his bis books especially one kept by S M until his death this showed moneys paid in amounts of 1000 2500 2590 and various other amounts even down to a dollar most of it sent in october of last year and the following months previous to mr hills return to ogden it also showed the disbursements mainly in labor and material mr jayne also stated that most of the funds collected were received before mr hills return ab there were a great many more things stated by mr hill but he did not care them published as the whole thing will be ventilated at the approaching conference A member of the board sent in the following statement regarding Soa smalls alls action which will doubtless be read with as much interest as the small letter and with far greater satisfaction I 1 the letter in the standard of saturday may has the appearance of the a university board has baa with christian charl charily i y and patience borne with mr small until it to involved in difficulties from which it will take long to recover promised to send the board at 1 least east every two weeks and this we believed he be would be able to do as he showed us his books where he had made from to per year in lecturing it if he be could do this for himself he certainly could do it for the university with all its interests as an additional lever on the purses of the people the money was to be sent as last fast as collected but we have received only du during ring the they year tear the slowness with which the work has progressed has justly disappointed the people but we have waited in hope believing that at the last mr small would give us a happy surprise as he be himself stated was his purpose writing to a preacher in the territory he says in substance 1 I will soon boon be back to utah with a surprise that will fill the land with hallelujahs we have waited but as yet seen nothing to shout over as asfar far as the university is concerned the hoard board undertook the work delegated to them at the annual conference in good faith and high hopes we expected to meet every obligation and rise to every expectation of the people we have had our battles to fight and expect to fight them until the methodist Meth odise university of utah shall be an accomplished success every obligation shall be met the threatening storms have led some of vie fie board to resign but live five of us still stand with our shoulders to the wheel have assumed obligations which none of us should do iu in justice to our families and will prove to the people of ogden and others that we propose to stand the stuff as as there is anything left of us mr small is in canada a long way off has not been to utah since last august and does not seem to understand der stand the situation or to be at al in sympathy with the university work but promises to do all he can to destroy the confidence of the country lu in the enterprise his vivid imagination leads him to think we are at war with him when our hopes have been centered in his bis effort we have done him no injustice as be thinks but have by every possible means tried to got get him on the ground even offering to pay his bis expenses to and from utah he has made many promises but failed every time at his bis own suggestion preachers the audited his acco accounts unta and decided he was owing to the university 1100 according to their best judgment even this amount we cannot gaetand get and wonder he does not send it on we hope to call a meeting of the citizens of ogden soon and lay befaro them all the facts of the case we believe their verdict will be that we have acted in good faith and done all we could under the circumstances pl the members of the board residing at ogden are rev bev 0 E jayne rev bev J wesley hill and C B R hank those living at salt sait lake are dr T C ileff and M nelson whether P A aei H franklin is still with the board or not could not be from the above letter it would appear that he had resigned ogdon ogden on standard may |
