Show 0 STATUS OF THE UTAH SUGAR FACTORY ON may a representative of the visited the sugar factory in utah county in order that the people of the territory might be informed through the columns of this journal concerning the progress being made in establishing what is destined to be for many years to come the chief industry of utah for the means of attaining the object in view the news gleaner is in indebted to mr C A granger who during a temporary absence of super in thomas R cutler was la in full charge of the general business of f the factory he also assists the manager when the latter is at home mr granger is active and energetic and has the advantage of being conversant with all the details connected with the manufacture reida of refined sugar having been employed for some time by E H dyer and company in their factory at aivarado california the gentlemen who are erecting the utah establishment and who have contracted to run it for one year during last winter mr granger was engaged a good deal of his hir time in accompanying compa nying supt bupt cutler in visits to the settlements delivering brief and explicit lectures to the farmers in relation to proper methods of raising bests beets which is a vital branch of the sugar industry the first impression made upon the visitor as he appio approaches aches the factory buildings to is one of astonishment caused by the magnitude of the structures the attention is then instinctively directed toward the somewhat squatty aspect they present the latter appearance pe arance is created by the tremendous ground proportions compared to the height this will be readily imagined when it ip if stated that the main building is by 80 feet and the annex by oo 00 feet all except a part of the annex is three stories dories high there is a small structure on throop the roof of the main building which somewhat marm the general appearance of the latter it to Is to accommodate the vacuum pans pann and it was deemed that it would be sheer extravagance to raise the main structure ture another story for that object alone hence the roof addition the buildings are light colored brick and have exceptionally strong foundations in fact the whole premises areas are as near perfection in the matter of being substantial as an they can well be they are without crack or blemish the contractor for the mawn mason work to is mr ellas elias morris mr H H evans being foreman on the ground the latter Is i one of the moet careful workmen in the territory the in terrors are heavily timbered some of the beams being 16 x 16 inches extending from floor to roof the carpenter work is done by taylor rom bom ney armstrong mr busher a very capable workman is their foreman on the grounds the company have begun the arec erection of a boarding house bouse 70 by 40 feet and three stories high for the accommodation mo dation of the workmen in a short time the erection of beet sheds for storage purposes will be begun they will be between and feet long these figures appear somewhat large it must be remembered however that when the factory begins to run it will take tons of beets to keep it going to its full capacity for each round of the machinery of thirty ft fix hours and it costs as much to operate it fully as below the degree of which it to is cap capable sible again the company must possess facilities for receiving beets from the farmers at any time the latter may be prepared to deliver them in relation to the buildings it la Is proper here to state with no small mall degree of satisfaction that the mean meagre dyer assert that they are second to those of no other sugar factory in the united states mates it is impossible at this stage to give a definite idea of the character of the machinery at least not as the result of personal inspection it will cause some astonishment however when it is stated as a fact that that which is to be placed in the utah factory to is so extensive that it will require one hundred care can to convey it from cleveland ohio where it is manufactured to the grounds awen ty four carloads had arrived just previous to the visit of the representative 7 of the NEWS and with it came an expert mechanical engineer to erect it this gentleman was just on the point of having it unloaded and masons were finishing some of the foundations for it so it may be taken for granted that the work of placing the machinery in position has already begun some boma time since we published de talk tails of the sugar factory es at lincoln nebraska we understand that the building and capacity of that factory are about similar to that of the utah concern that of our territory has however a decided advantage over that of nebraska for the reason that while ours will require but one hundred men to it the other will need one hundred and eighty being nearly double the reason for this difference to is that the machinery in the lincoln factory is of german make while that being introduced into the utah establishment to is american the latter having been constructed with a special view to save manual labor the germans germane do not give as much attention to this point as do american inventors and machin ids for the reason that labor is comparatively ively cheap in the former coun ry the land sown in beets is quite ex the acreage put to this important use by private individuals farmers is 1800 acres extending from willard city box elder county in the north to leamington leavington Lea millard county and gunnison sanpete county in the south the main bulk of the land thus utilized however lies iles in salt lake and utah counties besides this large extent of ground devoted to beet raising purposes by private parties the sugar company have acres immediately north and contiguous to the factory where the root is growing most promisingly this makes a total acreage of 2100 acres on all of which with the exception of a few patches patch esthe the sugar producing roots are doing asplen the present rains are most opportune for this department of the industry and will dispense with the first application of irrigation the lowest estimate of the average production of sugar beets Is fifteen tons to the acre with a possible 26 25 tons basing the calculation on the lower fi figures kures the total result would be tons the capacity of the factory to is tons of beets every 36 hours the product of which will be thirty five tons of refined sugar every twenty four hours as the factory will be run day and night until the beet supply is con fumed the night and day shifts will consist of fifty men each As before stated E H dyer fo 4 co are under unde r contract to complete the entire construction and to ruu run the factory for one year mr E P F dyer was on the ground when the NEWS representative visited the buildings Is there the slightest room for doubt in relation to the success of the enterprise was asked of that gentleman Rent leman none in the leastle least was the ready response give us the beets and we will produce pure refined sugar and in the proportions stated it should also be said that the result will be in every particular the same as refined sugar produced from cane there being no chemical difference between the two products the process of manufacture will begin in september how long will it continue was asked of mr dyer it will last just as an long as there are beets to put through the machinery P was the reply the more one inquires into the subject of manufacturing refined sugar from beets beete the wore firma 7 convinced one becomes that it will undoubtedly ly be a grand and profitable success in utah and a great material blessing to the people of the territory at every step of the investigation doubt disappears before the encouraging proofs that come into sight the superintendent bishop thomas B R cutler is enthusiastic on the subject he has followed it if closely and has expended upon it a great deal of thought and energy he works at it as if the fate of the world was hanging on the issue this being one of the characteristics of his big nature in relation to any business project in which he engages we feel sure that the result of the establishment of an industry so important as the one now treated will be all that its most enthusiastic supporters have claimed for it so may it be |
