| Show BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTION the school election is past and while the result is as generally expected except in one instance the record will go down as one in which the most unblushing frauds were perpetrated to bring about a desired result on the part of the organization which has the election machinery in its handstand hands and which is clamoring and working for minority control in this thia territory FIRST MUNICIPAL WARD this ward was carried by the liberala Liber alc IH IB february and the same result was anticipated for yesterday but it would not have been BO had the people been allowed to east cast their full strength as shown in the comparative table of election returns publish published ea today names of peoples peopled voters were stricken off from the registry list without stint some of the meu men thus treated being op oll and well known citizens for tp the erasure of whose names the registrar cannot find the shadow of an excuse but his reward is in the fact that it serves his party well the result in the first municipal ward was the election by a vote of to of hiram johnson and george W snow liberals as trustees for that district SECOND MUNICIPAL WARD here the same katics were resorted to though probably not to the same extent as the peoples peopled voters are the minority there except debates there was little of a nature among the peoples peopled voters who were stricken from lists were men who have lived 25 to 80 30 years at the same place residence they have voted years past and were on the tafe re registry ls I 1 try lists they were willing take the oath or furnish an any y that was necessary to establish right to vote but they summarily shut off by the liberal Libei Libe ial all judges the trustees elected in the second ward are wm win nelson and T C armstrong jr ary liberals in the afternoon here the horde of lil brals which were brought up from the B R G W depot for any purpose were shipped to the twentieth ward schoolhouse school house as their votes were not needed in the ward where they were phird MUNICIPAL WARD inthis in this district in february the people had a majority of the liberal managers manager made a bold attempt to steal the ward by cutting off by wholesale from the registration lists the names of peoples peopled party voters among them were men born raised and now DOW living in the ward they have been registered and have voted for years they are well known to the deputy registrar george lambourne and have been since boyhood yet that official erased their names and that without just cause others who were similarly treated were numbered among old settlers here who have aided in developing the country from the time it was an arid wilderness it was no wonder then that there was a feeling of auger anger at the outrage perpetrated upon them they went to the registrar Q E allen alien for redress and he gave them a note with a pretense of being fair but it did no good his show of fairness was but hypocrisy and the american citizens thus grossly wronged had to submit because they were members of the peoples peopled party the liberal plot however did not work from the fact that those of the peopled Is party whose names still remained turned out in force and rolled up a majority of one otfred and fourteen for their candidates a good showing in view of the difficulties they had to encounter it ic was discovered here that the registrar had stricken off the name of one of the peoples peopled eandi candidates dates for trustee joseph 8 S hyde so the name of mr john N pike which was graciously permitted to remain on the list was substituted and he received the full vote john N pike and wm J newman peoples peopled candidates were elected trustees from the third municipal ward FOURTH MUNICIPAL WARD the most barefaced and impudent attempts at fraud in elections occurred in the fourth municipal ward when the peoples peopled party committees obtained a copy of the feg registration list for that ward it was found that considerably over one hundred names chiefly irish were thereon and could not be accounted for by residence occupation or anything else at the polls it was soon disclosed where these voters came from A motley crowd of dirty drunken irishmen came at intervals to the twentieth ward schoolhouse to vote and gave sueh such names as were then at the polls the scenes that took place while sometimes amusing ought to have brought a blush of shame to any political party that could condescend to such miserable tactics in order to produce the results they desired but there is no room for shame among the liberal leaders there some of the incidents are cited A man giving the name of ernest bates presented himself at poll no 1 and on being challenged and questioned as to his bis residence he tell where he lived another giving the name of thomas collins was in the same predicament on being asked where he lived he seemed confused and muttered something about having no fixed abode he could not inform the judges just where he did live Another giving the name of patrick dougall said he be worked at the rio grande depot and on being questioned as to where he lived he replied up city creek no house no number no street no place in particular but auard just at up in city creek he did not board with anybody he did not live with anybody he merely lived up by the upper waterworks water works such a man was considered fit to exercise the right of franchise and vote the liberal ticket another man attempting to vote in the name of james C gibson was challenged as to his bis residence he claimed t have lived one week in the ward but could not tell when or where on being requested to take the oath he refused to do so go and rather than be bothered and hampered with further questions he snatched his ballot and made for the door there were seven others to whom it was too much of an ordeal to take the oath and rather than do so they walked off the effrontery with which these batches were brought up and put in line to vote there exceeded anything that has ever taken place in the district before some of those who presented themselves when questioned as to where they lived said in city creek do you live in city creek was then asked yes sir air in city creek but do you live in the creek well no not in the creek but by the side of av it others would frankly acknowledge that they had bad neither house nor habitation of any kind not even a tent to cover their heads and on being interrogated concerning this they replied 1 I was hard up and had to sell my tent and now I 1 am living under seme acme brush I 1 have a right to vote here one man presented himself the second time to vote and on being recognized and questioned said that rather than have any bother he would withdraw he took his ballot and departed several on beings being questioned as to their place of residence appeared to be paralyzed for the moment and had bad not the faintest idea what reply to give one pointing said 1 I live three blocks down that way and two over there but he could neither give the name of the party nor describe the house bouse and street another said 1 I live at mur phyla well rejoined the judge where is over there pD pointing inting but I 1 dont know the street nor the number of the house well but where is after a pause sure I 1 cannot tell was the answer another on being asked where here he be lived replied oh I 1 live at kellys well where is kellys oh I 1 cant tell you where kellys is only I 1 know I 1 live therell there one man admitted that he was registered at the clift cliff house and another that he was registered in a saloon down town what saloon saloons was demanded well I 1 dont know where it is replied the would be voter only its a saloon loon down town others would answer that they were working at the rio bio grande depot and lived away up city creek at the upper waterworks water works 1 l where nobody resides one individual presented himself and gave the name of israel V W fletcher 1 l the challenger for the people peoples s party being a personal friend of fletcher and associated with him in business was astonished on hearing the name given by this individual and exclaimed what what is your name the man then answered isaac fletcher and attempted to vote in that name but not having been sufficiently posted he wilted and went out another presented himself under tinder the name of james T gallacher gallacher was known to some of those present and to say that they were amazed at the boldness of men coming up to personate other people but feebly expresses the situation the liberal judges seemed disposed to allow every man to vote who said he was in the precinct provided his appearance indicated that he was a CL liberal eliberal iberal 11 B Y hampton and william calder were challenged on the ground of being polygamists both had subscribed to the oath and were registered although they were willing and anxious to again subscribe to the oath they were de barred from doing so and from casting their ballot 4 ju ite a number of the peoples peopled party were stricken off the li by the liberal registrar for reasons best known to himself one man presented himself and gave the name of richard H cabell on being challenged it was discovered that he be had not resided six months in the territory when he registered A discussion arose over this point the liberal judges holding that it was not necessary while the minority judge reading the oath which says that he had resided six months iu in the territory anti and thirty days io in the precinct maintained it ft was absolutely necessary that it should be so mr cabell was frank enough to admit that he had bad not resided the required time and that the oath had bid been changed to suit his particular circumstances will deputy registrar kessler explain this fraud another man stood in a similar position as mr cabell his residence in the territory had not exceeded three months still his name was placed on the registry list by deputy registrar kessler A hackman was asked to convey four persona perso natora tors from the B R G W depot to the fourth precinct polling place in the afternoon he refused as he be did not want to have anything to do with the disreputable business he drove to the polls empty and reported ahead that the liberal toughs might be appropriately pria tely received they were lo brought rought up in an express wagon the peoples challengers worked on them they could give no intelligible account of residence or other qualification their votes were not refused but seeing the situation they withdrew jumped upon a street streetcar car and disappeared A few minutes before the time for closing the polls two loads of liberal persona tors were dumped on to the twentieth ward square the they y were also from the R G W depot several persons wearing liberal badges went among them whispering gently in ila their ears giving them it is presumed the names of persons aney were to personate mr patrick warned the transients that if they voted they chev would be arrested as they had no right to vote one of the fallows was under the influence of liquor remarked to tb one of the liberal I ill be d d if ill vote for that amount it enough ap finally the crowd left without voting at about the same instant judge hoge appeared at the door of the building and said gentlemen the polls are closed at poll no 2 the liberal 11 judges acted much more gentlemanly though they caused a good ueal of unnecessary annoyance heny and charles sansom were among those challenged for having been polygamists they offered to take the oath that they were not but were rejected afterwards this decision was reconsidered and they were allowed to vote other similar cases were acted on in the same way mr sansom sandom jr a s name was spelled with a final u instead of m and though he was known to be the proper person he had to go down to the utah commission office to the deputy registrar 7 d do 0 co considerable more ru running n ni ng abo before he was finally permitted to lo east his ballet tiie the proceedings cited at poll no 1 show the method by rhth h mr Willi williams arne receive il two votes more thau mr young thus evert overturning the will wih of the majority of the legal voters in the fourth municipal ward with respect to him As the face of the returns now hows there are returned for trustees trusses george D people and P L williams liberal FIFTH WARD at this district matters were quiet though a good vote was polled there was no show of frauds there probably for the reason that the district is three fourths liberal and I 1 the he usual adjuncts of that party were unnecessary the result was the election of L U colbath and C E liberals as trustees those elected yesterday with mayor scott compose the board of education the political complexion is the mayor and seven trustees liberals three trustees people following are the returns of the election july Q ifeanyi feb ary Q MUNICIPAL WARDS va e 0 peo zib lib ea FIRST fuller pe am riter biter people johnson Joh
