Show UNION PACIFIC STRIKE there was a little trouble at the union pacific depot on july loth the trainmaster train master reduced the number of brakemen in the crew of a long on g freight train about to start for juab ju b from three to two this the crew claimed was an imposition they said they could not do the re quiren work with the reduced number already they were overworked and underpaid and they needed the third man to do checking that was necessary 3 they said they now had bad to work from eleven to eighteen hours per day and could barely earn living wages at that they were informed that the reduction would be badeas the man ordered oft off was considered unnecessary then the conductor refused to take the train out there was a pause when a stranger a scab came along and said lie he would do the work with the reduced crew he went on the train but was dot there when he was hit on the head by a rock thrown ly by some oue and rendered unit for the work trie tile yardman yardmen n also refused to t go 90 out on the train and all of the he workmen stood by the s striking crew As a result not a freight train moved out ot of the yards the strike was likely to have the effe effect ctol ot materially interfering with the interests of the public and the railway officers would not recede from the position taken then the men in order so they allege to avoid causing the public any inconvenience veni ence agreed to go out under protest so trains began running again this morning the matter has been referred to a grievance committee of the brotherhood of trainmen who will make an effort to settle by arbitration sympathy is largely with the men as the strike was not precipitated by them in a demand for in rease but was brought about by an effort to reduce the force whdeh they claimed would require two men to do the work of three it J t is to be hoped that an amicable amicable arrangement will be entered into by which a strike will be averted if the men are sustained in their positions as now seems likely from the expressions of members of organization in other branches of the road and the company does not take a different view to that held by the trainmaster a tie up along the entire road is likely to ensue |
