Show SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION the officers officer and teachers of the sabbath schools of this stake met in regular session on monday evening december 1 1890 in the four assembly hall stake slant bupt john C cutler culler presiding fider elder levi W richards richard s oell offered ered the opening prayer the singing f exercises were excellently tendered gendered len dered by the eighteenth W ard ird choir under the direction of D A swan after the calling of the roll elder DA D A swan delivered anin an interesting te and instructive lecture on the subject of obedience 11 1 1 commencing meda from the well known scripture ito to obey is better than sacrifice and to harken barken than the fat of rams the want of respect in the young 40 ward the age aged d the utter disregard of the authority of parents and teachers so rapidly becoming almost universal throughout american society was in the speakers opinion the cause of many boys becoming hoodlums and without regard fur for national or social low law the tendency in modern society in ia the family and the school was to maintain authority by moral suasion ous sion or not to maintain rusin tain it at all and as 6 0 consequence obedi obedience elice in chil children drep either at home bome or in the wi ht bool ool iscom room was very rare the itar it kr sid that and r re 9 L for the authority of parents should be insisted upon and main bained if necessary by compulsion family discipline of the strictest order was necessary sary to the spiritual and moral growth and development of the children the general question was then put how many latter day saint children are there in your ward how many are attending regularly and what steps if any are being taken to increase attendance the replies were made by superintendents jas jam saville ot of the eighteenth ward wilford smith of the fourth ward niels of the first ward and P r V williams of tho the twelfth ward the attendance of the children cli ildren inthe schools represented will average about half of the total number of latter day saint children residing ther therein elu the visits of sunday sch school schol ol committees made on sunday mornings from froin house to ahouee throughout the wards had been productive of much good where this work had been done Again where there were teachers who took a per oual interest in their class and prepared interesting lessons for their children and were always at thear ther post of duty on sunday morning it was no trouble to get a good attendance superintendent juhn john C cutler who left upon a mission to england wednesday dec bee 3 addressed the meeting he expressed bis pleasure displeasure with the good reports and suggestions given by the superintendent and suggested that nil school euper supera should use every effort possible to increase the attendance ot of children in their schools assistant superintendent R S horne home made a few closing remarks and announced that the T twentieth ward school would furnish the musical exercises of the january meeting of the union the choir sang rock of siges ages and the benediction was aronou pronounced need by president joseph E taylor the attendance at this meeting was large nearly all the city and several of the country schools being represented jos JOB HYRUM PARRY sec |
