the priesthood of the fourteenth ward officiated in the administration of the sacrament ELDER ELDEB CHARLES F WILCOX addressed the congregation he said they had met to partake of the emblems of the broken body and shed blood of our Ra redeemer deemer that they wight might do this acceptably they should prepare themselves by reflecting upon the object of this ordinance it would help them somewhat to remember that jesus himself established this principle and commander comman deJ those who believed on his name to cor continue to partake of the sacrament in remembrance of him and his hia suffering for us he made atonement for us so that we might burst the bonds of death rise triumphant from the grave and stand before him in heaven jesus said we were to do this often in remembrance of him and promised that those who would do so with honest hearts shouni phoui have eternal life those promises were certainly certai aly worthy of our consideration the atonement was for all mankind and all would ba made partakers par takers thereof father adam sinned he be transgressed the law of heaven and thereby became subject to death hut but as in adam all die even so lix in christ shall all be made alive if therefore through the transgression gres sion of our first parent we all become subject to death it was only reasonable that by the vicarious atonement which jesus made for us we should hil live if we repented of our individual sins and went down into the waters of baptism for their remission then the che atoning blood had power and saved those who obeyed his laws and commandments their belief was that they would be punished for their own sins and not for adams transgression and that by obeying the laws and ordinances of the gospel I 1 they and all mankind would be ri saved ved if they incurred the displeasure of god they could not breasure op ope to gain his pr greence pre ence so long as that displeasure existed without faith it is impossible for men to be saved sinfulness is uncleanness and no unclean person can enter into the kingdom of S heaven the plan of salvation is so plain that none can be mistaken or leed go astray if when those ID principles Manci ples revealed by god are set fore us w we e reject them and are llred jtb doubt and fear what ex cuse can we offer when the question is put have ye kept my corn com I 1 here testify that I 1 know god has bus apkin from the heavens that he has revealed his mind angwill and will that he has appeared in person to the prophet joseph smith that he revealed unto him the whole plan of ha and sl salvation anew and conferred upun upon him all the keys power anil and authority to build up and establish his church upon the earth in these latter days daye I 1 know also th thit t joseph smith conferred that une sune s authority and power upon the twelve apostles just prior to his martyrdom that same power that priesthood that authority and everything essential to the complete es establishment t of the church and kingdom of god is in our midst today they are ours we have reason to rejoice for the hope that is within us may god open all our winds minds to the principles of eternal truth may the darkness he removed may we have the spirit of faith and unity may we feel like sustaining those in authority over us and be able to withstand the trials and temptations which beset us so 80 that when our labors are finished we may be thought worthy to enter into theroy the joy of our lord miss ida daynes sang a solo selo angels ever bright and fair after which COUNSELOR JOSEPH E TAYLOR remarked that as it still wanted a few to the time of closing their services he desired to endorse the remarks of elder he referred to the past as a closed book and said that a little of the future had been revealed just enough to give us inspiration to furnish an incentive to action on our ou r part to make that future bright anti and glorious we sometimes in bulged in speculative theories concerning the future and asked ourselves many questions concerning it but there was no being on the face of the earth who 0 uld tell the story of the future except to a very limited degree the speaker briefly dwelt upon the subject of the atonement showing that it reached the dead as well as the living and the responsibility of the redemption of the dead through the ordinances of the gospel rested upon us god expected that we would diligently perform that duty he earnestly counseled parents to train up their children in the ways of the gospel and to love god above all things the choir sang the hymn corn com earth with her ten thousand 11 flowers air with all its beams and showers bishop elias morris pronounced the benediction |
