committee still retains a lingering hope that he way may yet secure action upon his anti mormon bilk he is not certain but merely hopeful that speaker reed will give his bis committee a day for the consideration of some borne of its measures if the speaker shall do this the mormon bill which lies nearest to mr heart will be the first taken up there is little if any probability that mr wish will be gratified speaker reed autocratically decides what measures shall and what shall not come up there is nothing in the territories committee that he is especially interested te in and if there were he dislikes mr struble so intensely that he be would not permit him to enjoy the personal triumph in getting it through no one knows that better than the iowa representative and it is for this reason that he is not over sanguine of having his committee called senator edmunds tells me ine that he be will push the anti mormon legislation next session if the opportunity offers but this is a very remote probability the next session will be too limited to satisfactorily dispose of the force bill the appropriation bills and a few others of prime importance to justify congress in passing utah legislation in which not a half dozen members feel a direct interest the indications are that the mormon bills like the force bill and the salt lake public building are dead for this congress at least Ji herald erald an irish famine LONDON aug 25 although the london papers still discuss the subject in small type on their inside pages and have not thought it worth while to send a single staff man to inquire into the exact situation the conviction that an irish famine is impending is slowly asserting itself in the popular mind as the dormant topic of interest terest iu the progress of the idea may well be called slow for the warning that a blight had bad set in came from southwest south west cork as long ago as the middle of may and in july parish by scores had printed statements of the disaster hanging banging over their people yet it is only a fortnight since balfour spoke of having just learned that there was some little trouble with the crops in certain districts and as has been sai deven now the london press only reprints summaries of investigations reported by the british papers yet these are enough to show the terrible outlook already the dread disease known as famine fever words which call up such sinister memories in all old enough to remember 1847 has made its appearance in the barony of Clona killy which is composed of rough coast land between kinsale and skibbereen ereen one death has occurred and numerous prostrations prost rations have been caused by eating diseased potatoes of the people in this district nearly one half will be entirely without food by the middle of september and the gravest fears are entertained that before that date an ala epidemic of famine fever or english cholera will become fastened upon the country the potatoes are so badly diseased that aan the pigs are injured by eating them in the district round about youg hal including the notorious estate the farmers are plowing all the potato land up with the intention of planting cat cabbages bages in the hope of providing some sort of food for the winter these are only illustrations chosen at random from the whole country side thus far nothing has been done here or elsewhere in england for that matter e except languidly to dig discuss icuss the sub eject act but a few weeks time will see it t occupy the principal place in public c talk and thought city school which was adopted resolved that it is the sense of this board that the burdens burden of school maintenance and as regards property rights be equalized and that the committee on audits be requested to report a proper form of such ada adjustments on motion of col nelson pike and colboth Col bith were appointed a special committee to ratify the action of the nineteenth school district in the contract made with the association regarding the division of Df property in that ward mr air pike moved that it be the sense of the board that taxes assessed in any local school district so far as practicable and necessary shall be expended in such district until their actual necessities for school buildings are supplied this motion brought on a discussion which occupied considerable time mr williams opposed it strenuously on the ground that it was going back to the old district lines which the legislature legisla tur intended to wipe out the scheme of the board was to build up one complete system without reference refer erce to any I 1 parti parth ular district colonel nelson and mr johnson both spoke in favor of the motion they did not think it would interfere with the scheme of the board and it would inspire confidence dence in the people that the board intended to act equitably the motion finally prevailed by a vote of 5 to 4 and the board then adjourned for one week emery stake
