Show DEATH OF A NOBLE WOMAN on wednesday at 5 a m january ath mrs mary jane jan runner fanner of provo departed this life aged 53 her unexpected demise cast quite a gloom over the community on the sunday monday and tuesday previous she was confined to her bed though not dot so 80 seriously ill as to create any apprehension or alarm the immediate cause of death was considered by the physicians to have been paralysis of the heart mrs tanner was the mother of nine children six of whom are living the circumstances of her pioneer life in utah and those attending her immigration from the east are woven in the jives of many latter day saints and formed a considerable part of the hardships encountered by the early founders of f the territory she never possessed a strong physical constitution and suf suffered fored much during many years of her lve life of late years however her health had bad much improved at a very early age the deceased showed a strong inclination toward literary pursuits and in the intervals of her domestic calls wrote short poems A few years ago they were collected and published under the title of fugitive poems besides these contributions she wrote frequently for the womans comans exponent and other istah journals she was very jond fond ot 06 reading read ing the poets and became familiar with the standard english authors but the later years of her life were marked by a fond ne s for heavy prose literature hume ribbon josephus josehus macaulay and other well known writers she pursued with great interest history was her delight and so carefully did she follow current event as to be fully conversant with the leading topics of the day and was aole able to explain the relation and descent of most of the present resent reigning houses of europe ahe she possessed a high sense of patriotism and aid thoroughly enjoyed political literature and though she never sought publio publicity ity and political leal agitation she was never lost on political questions the late sister r fanner EL was recently called to the position of president of theW omans suffrage association of utah county and on the occasion of her appo made an eloquent appeal in behalf of her sex one which did credit both to herself and the cause which she then advocated for many y years e a rs she was president of the belief society in the ward over which her husband presided and was devoted to th vie tue relief of suffering humanity her life was largely occupied with domestic cares and public pursuits she was extensively known throughout the Ter territory Citory in her poems there was a strong pathetic element for which she was sometimes criticised criticized and which she appropriately explains in a beautiful poem entitled my lyre is not toned to mirth and glee I 1 I 1 would sing to you a happier song but my lyre is not toned to mirth and glee toe the goddess in passing just swept them along and left a few sorrowful notes to me I 1 would sing of pleasure to those that are gay whose hearts are young and whose hopes are bright but pleasure is fleeting beating and passes away and after the morving morning then cometh the night then let me sing to the heart that is sad to the soul that is bowed with grief and cars care I 1 will tell of a land that Is fair and glad and the loving friends that will greet us me there but give giro to my lyre a happier tone and ill touch tonch the chords with a joyful air for he be that is faithful shall wear a crown in the days of eternity fresh and fair |
