Show SNOW AND WIND friday afternoon january 17 a telephone message was received at the utah nevada depot stating that the engine had been disabled and was fast in a snow drift near erda station thoele tooele county immediately upon receipt of this message mr riter biter ordered an engine to the relief upon it were the engineer fireman brakeman mr riter and a NEWS representative with plenty of supplies for the em aloyes and passengers the reporter had been invited to join the party by mr riter and accepted the invitation with the reply that perhaps berha the ride might furnish an item of news and at the same time be a little romantic at it will be romantic said orbiter Mr Biter Riter as the engine left the depot the snow had been and still was drifting to the depth of many feet feat in the railway cuts and as the engine would burrow its way through them every man with good grip not la ila grippe held fast to the iron rod As the locomotive emer jred from the snowy depths mr riter biter often inquired Is it romantic enough yet the rejoinder was it will be more more so if this continues much longer about nine miles from this city while running at a high rate of speed the engine struck suddenly again sta large drift and the engineer who all the way along had manifested a degree of coolness not often mft met with called out look out boys we are going overl over 11 sure enough at that instant the engine jumped the track and embedded itself in the snow it was waa real romantic and fortu fortunately bately no one was hurt the breaking of the pilot in the snow drift was the cause of the accident mr riter biter made his way to a telephone station a mile distant and ordered another locomotive to the scene of the accident it was waited for some time but being of light build it made but slow progress and the disabled engine was left in charge of the engineer while the remainder of the he party began a walk back in the perking cold they were met near garden arden cit city by the engine last sent for by mr biter aud and were brought brough tto to this city supt bupt riter biter says that in his ten years railroad experience upon that line he has never known the snow now t to be so deep as now dow two more engines were sent out saturday january 18 to relieve the passenger train near erda apostle F M lyman and prest HS H S gowans bowans are among the passengers on board the train A telephone message this forenoon stated that the passengers were yet without provisions A telephonic communication from F M lyman jr of thoele tooele at 12 stated that a relief party would be sent out immediately from there so possibly the passengers have received aid before this the relief party that left this city this morning reached garfield galfield gal field at a little after one this afternoon squads ot men are at work all along the line shoveling snow the relief train unless an accident occurs will reach the passenger train amin before morning mr riter biter is on board and he will get through if such a thing is possible ossi b le u under present conditions M the latest message received was waa that the relief train had bad left garfield and was between that point and nobles ranch about five miles from the belated train it was making very slow progress but was moving the snow is up to the car windows so a slight idea can be formed of what has to be met with the wind is blowing almost a hurricane and the snow drifting terribly while at the same time the cold to is intense on the train that to Is sought to be relieved there are a number of passengers one of whom is a lady who resides in the eighteenth ward of this city the utah nevada branch of the union pacific is not however alone in its ite dispute with the snow up to thursday the echo park M aty line was kept open pretty well but on n that evening the train stuck in a snow bank a few miles balles out of park Cit yand the passengers walked into the town the train finally got th cough however and at 2 yesterday morning started on its return after a great many delays delaya caused by the filling of cuts it reached ogden last night there some of the passengers bound for salt lake awaited the night train on the utah central division Butth but this ishad had to le be abandoned and they came down on the B R GW this morning the park irk city line is now reported as closed up january 17 the utah central got one train to ogden and back from this city yesterday afternoon a freight started out but was stopped just north of the hot springs stuck in the snow A freight from the north got in the same locality and stayed there A passenger started down from ogden last night but could not get past the freights and this morning was seen at farmington backing up to ogden for a new baart 12 the cause of this trouble was the heavy drifting of snow between the hot Spring pt and woods cross from the hills above it was brought down by the wind in immense quantities and laid in windrows wind rows over a strip estrip of about two and one half miles of country by this means a long section of railway track was buried and it was impossible for the locomotives to force their way through the B R G W was in the same fix except that they had a snowplow on hand and cleared their track today the utah central had a large force of men at work shoveling snow and opened up the line the regular regular trains will leave at 4 and 6 p m the southbound train left at 9 this morning instead of the causes that led up to this were that yesterday afternoons south bound passenger was blockaded in the cut at the point of the mountain it got through la in the night and the passenger due here from the south at lat last night arrived about 7 this morning the unfortunate part of this ajo proceeding is that it the utah central division dv ision had had the snowplow snow plow constructed ted here on hand band the delays would have amounted to but little this plow does marvelous work in a snowbank snow bank and on it opened the point of the mountain south the salt luke lukea western division was completely blocked being covered up almost its entire length yesterday morning the snowplow snow plow was sent down there and worked its way through successfully on the return trip however the obstacles encountered delay delayed tod the train and the locomotives ran out of water effectually killing them so the plow must remain out there till it can be reached and hauled in the reports from the union pacific also show that it is with the greatest difficulty a few trains can be brought through and then with no degart to schedule time the utah northern is in in a little worse condition and the central pacific to is completely blockaded ta EL Q G W gets its passenger trains through at great effort all being reported behind time the narrow gauge up parleys parley a canyon cannot get over into the park at all altogether the snowfall has made a strong combine against the railroads and it has required the most careful management to kee keep p them in anything like shape there is one special feature in favor of the local lines and that is the comparative freedom from accidents at a r A time when everything tends to render them probable I 1 f the present weather continues a few days however all janger of a serious blockade will be put past for the present at least
