lowing resolution resolved that the thanks of this house are justly due and hereby tendered to the honorable james sharp for the able and impartial manner in which he has discharged the duties of speaker during the legislative session of 1890 now about to close in doing so he said mr speaker it sometimes happens in the experience of men that a duty is 18 devolved upon them which it is botn an honor and a duty to perform that to is my position tonight as I 1 speak to the resolution I 1 have just offered mr speaker this house made no mistake when they selecta i you to occupy the chair which you have so nobly filled during the present session your promptness in attendance and in dispatch of business has been an example by which every member has h profited the fidelity and ud industry with which you examined every hill bill and resolution whether offered by members or reported from comm committees committed commit ittes an incentive ve to us all to ex be t the same characteristics in our arop place within the bar of the house Your general impartiality both to members and measures we gladly fe recognize cognize your uniform courtesy to every member of this house we fully acknowledge anti your helpful aid to those of us who like myself are passing through their first experience in legislation has been greatly appreciated and now sir air speaking for the party which I 1 have the h honor n r in part t to 0 cpr represent on this alz floor 0 a small minority ant it is true but which we confidently expect in the near future to make much larger we thank you for the generous recognition we have received in placement upon committees and recognition upon the floor at times it may be we have arrived at different conclusions from those determined by you and at other times may have been somewhat restive under rulings that were not favorable to that which we wished to attain but the irritation if any existed has passed with the occasion that gave rise to the feeling and left no sting behind in conclusion I 1 repeat we made no mistake when we elected you speaker of this house may you remember this session with feelings of pleasure and be assured that you will carry with yo you u from this c chamber amber kou and frombach fro from meach each member of this house sentiments of great respect and high esteem the resolution was carried unanimously by a rising vote and as the members resumed their seats the speaker said or of the me legislative assembly A I 1 have to thank you for the resolution you have setin seen fit to pass pam and I 1 accept the sentiments it expresses I 1 in u the same spirit with which V t feel it was introduced I 1 have to thank you for its evidence of your regard and can only say that in presiding over your deliberations it was with a feeling that made the duty a plo pleasure asure at all times I 1 recognized the efforts that you all made to facilitate legislation and I 1 realize to the fullest extent the support that you one and all and at all times rendered the chair you made the discharge of the speakers duty a pleasure and now that we are about to separate I 1 can assure you that I 1 am proud to have been associated with you during the session the work you have done will go out to your constituents and show them that you have not only looked after their inai individual vidual interests but also those of the territory at large once more I 1 thank you and van ran assure every member of this house that there to is a warm spot in the speakers speaker Is heart for each one of them A presentation later in the evening mr allen alien asked the floor in behalf of mr thurman Tb urman when that gentleman arose and spoke as follows mr speaker the revolving wheels of time as marked on yonder dial admonish us of the solemn fact that this assembly is approaching the hour of dissolution the mem 10 moves the balet that 4 when we go forth from it will be to mingle again in the ordinary affairs of life perhaps forgetful of these our pleasurable associations may we not fur for one brief moment even in these the closing hours of legislation thrust aside the regular order of business aud and commune as friends with one another mr speaker I 1 speak for all every member and every officer when I 1 say to youa you that by your con duct as a presiding dlug officer and a fendleman fent gentleman leman you have established friendships ships for yourself as durable as the everlasting hills whatever may have been and whatever now may be our differing matters relating to the affairs of state concerning yours yourself elfand and our regard for you there is but one mind andone and one opinion under your wise just and impartial administration of the duties of presiding officer we have been enabled notwithstanding our differing views to work shoulder to shoulder and to serve our country as we believe for our country good it we have made mistakes they have been of the head bead not of the heart if we have accorn complis hed good it is all we wea skWe ask no prouder name that of men who honestly sought to 0 o discharge their duty and add additional grandeur and stability to the commonwealth mr speaker as I 1 said before when the house adjourns it is not dot in the economy of heaven that all separate and depart and each one as an before will pursue b his is favorite fabbri te phantom one and all members and officers wo we wish to be remembered by you as a friend remembering a friend we wish to be kindly remembered by him whom we love as a friend even when he as well as ourselves to is velling travelling tra upon the shady side along the downward slope of life yes mr speaker when age and even decrepitude which may become the lot of every man becomes our lot and yours may you then feel and realize that what we tonight present to you as a simple memento of our warmest friendship has become a friend in time of need mr speaker when you grasp the gold with which this cane is mounted and clasp the names engraved thereon remember us when you lean for support upon this staff in your declining years when at last you bequeath it to some loved one of your own as a relic of your younger and mora more ambitious life remember us mr speaker on behalf of the members and officers of the house of representatives senta tives I 1 take pleasure in presenting to you this memento of their warm and enduring friendship B mr r thurm thurman a then banded the 13 speaker a handt handsome ome gold headed ebony cane engraved on the handle of which were the names of the officers of the house and also those thome of the members arranged in the order which they occupy when on the floor in en accepting the gift the speaker said mr thurman and gentlemen of the legislative assembly in granting the floor to one of the members by request the floor has been taken from under the speaker for once the speaker hardly remembers the order of business my heart to is too full to speak what I 1 feel but I 1 trust I 1 shall know what to do you have supported me honestly and earnestly in working for the common grod good and I 1 can say to you gentlemen as you have said to me that i f 1 have made mad e any mistakes they were of the head and not of the heart and bad I 1 been in the conspiracy a more pleasing selection could scarcely have been made again thanking you gentlemen I 1 have to say that the experience of this session has more than ever convinced me that we are all the children of one great father and while we may differ in politics we may yet be friends and that there is room enough for us all to live in this great common commonwealth wealth both as neighbors and as friends applause J |
