Show RETURNED ELDERS elder john E hansen of tooele thoele city tooele thoele county arrived in this city may 3 upon his return from a mission he he left home on april 1887 and trav traveled aled ah through rough north and south dakota during the first part of the summer the latter portion being spent in minnesota during the winter he labored in wisconsin ard and northern illinois and in the spring and summer of 1888 was located entirely in n wisconsin last october re be was transferred to the indiana conference and throughout last winter his sphere of duty was chiefly in southern indiana and kentucky H having i crossed the ohio river biver elder hansen and his co laborers chief among whom was elder jas L of grants ville opened up a new field in kentucky and baptized nine nine persons during the last three months of his stay while in harding county they were subjected to attacks but at the same time met with many warm friends on one occasion while moving from one schoolhouse to another in that part some four or five miles distant they were informed that they had better betor not continue the journey nor return to their former meeting place or they would be molested the warning was unheeded and shortly afterwards the missionaries found a mob of armed men drawn up in battle array near the roadside each individual was in possession of a club about three feet long and they all assumed a threatening attitude the elders upon reaching the schoolhouse were denied admission they thereupon endeavored to reason with the crowd telling them that the laws of the country granted free speech to all but this assertion was met by the answer not here by any means the missionaries asked them by what authority have you taken zis t this action towards us to which came the reply we have taken it upon ourselves thinking it advisable to avoid any possible disturbance the elders left without holding a meeting that ul night ht cv two or three days afterwards they were requested by a number of the inhabitants to resume their preaching the promise being given that a hundred of the best men of the place were at their service as a body guard the elders fulfilled the engagement the mo mob in the meantime having gathered some few hundred yards away from the meetinghouse with the intention of breaking up the assembly finding however that they were outnumbered in strength they desisted resisted des isted and the meeting was allowed to proceed quietly subsequently Subsequent lythe the would be mob bers sought to waylay the elders on the highway but one of their number betrayed the purpose of his companions thus timely advised the elders jumped on a couple of horses got away in an opposite direction and thereby eluded their persecutors elder hansen states that in harding county the prospect sas to the future are very encouraging elevena timms u having halving taken place there during his stay in that part and in the course of his two years mission fourteen persons altogether were baptized several meetings were broken up in southern indiana by the throw I 1 ing of stones atones but the elders mt met wilt wath good treatment at the hands of elder hansen hangen han gen returns home in excellent health and spirits mission having greatly enjoyed hil his elder david harris of glendale kane county likewise called in at our office on may 4 upon his return from the missionary field he left home on july 1887 and for the first nine months so 1 journea 0 U arned in the southern portion of 1 illinois 1 enols he then labored laborea around terre haute indiana for a period of six months next he went into green county indiana to open up a new field at this place helas he was fortunate in securing many generous friends the opposition encountered was very trifling and with the exception of one or two slight interruptions all the meetings passed off off successfully a number of people e 0 ale evincing facing an earnest desire to an fn investigate v the gospel truths elder james L of grantsville Grants ville was also among the returned missionaries he started upon his journey on march and went wen first to wisconsin where he continued to labor for some ten months among the st Strang n ites in company with elder EMA EM ADred ired his worker coworker co subsequently being elder hansen he traveled through a large tract of the count country but did not meet with very marked success in southern Iliin illinois nois ois however to which he was afterwards transferred the meetings were well attended an unmistakable spirit of inquiry was manifested on the part of the people and the elders were well received and hospitably treated elder william 0 Jeff jeffres hes of was another who came back from his mission on may ath he left utah on march 1887 in company with other elders went to wisconsin and during the first twelve mouths months labored in the southern portion of that sta tein company with elders joseph H Er ericcson iceson and martin A bunker they met with a warm reception from those among whom they dwelt in this region though it seems that the people as a whole were apparently indifferent to the gospel the next six months were spent by the elders in dakota where the prospects were not altogether of an encouraging cou raging nature the succeeds succeeding six months were devoted to wor work between southern illinois and southern indiana elder jeffries is very pleased with the results of his missionary work andrike and like his fellow laborers comes back in the best of health and spi spirits rifA elder 0 L packer of franklin and hamilton counties with elder angus vance and the two months following in white and gallatin counties his being elder M 0 holmes the succeeding six months his companion was waa thomas warrick in the test last named counties du during n na the summer of f 1888 he traveled with elder chas chaa G hyde most mostly in posey and warrick counties indi indiana from october 1888 till february 1889 he was engaged with elder B I 1 A in perry county illinois and from that time until released he journeyed alone in perry county during the greater portion of his mission elder packer enjoyed good health the only sickness being the chills and fever with which helas attacked in the last two mouths of his mission generally he and his fellow workers received good treatment he was appointed clerk of the indiana conference on may 1887 and held that position until april 22 1888 when he was applin appointed president of the conference which office he filled until his release |
