Show DEATH OF A CHIEF A DISPATCH received on tho of april announced the death of hon william H barnum who for a 4 long lon time was chairman of the national democratic central committee it will be remembered that mr barnum was seriously ill during a considerable portion of the time while the last presidential campa campaign igil was being fought it was feared then that he would succumb to the fell destroyer but he rallied and gave hopes of recovery How however everi he was too severely stricken and the sad news of his demise came as a cloud to dim the brightness of the great centennial celebration ex senator barnum was one of he leading politicians of the times he was familiar with politics in all its phases while in the senate of the united states he exhibited statesmanship of no mean order and in his own state connecticut bo wielded a very powerful political influence his skill and manage management mout saving that 8 state ta te to his party at tb the e last presidential election mr barnum showed his greatest abilities as chairman of the nations national democratic central committee he engineered the election of grover cleveland in 1884 and ids his masterly ma management of the campaign won him enthusiastic encomiums 1 his 1110 associates had great conA confidence dence in 10 his foresight and shrewdness and he was waa devoted to the lute interests rests of his party and to the maintenance of democratic principles which he firmly believed believe 4 was essential to the welfare of the nation in private life mr barnum ws kind genial and approachable and he made many friends who were closely attached to him his decease is a great loss to the Demo democratic crac party and the people of utah are deprived of a firm unfaltering friend who understood their and their motives and was ever ready to aid them to the extent of his bis power in their struggle for a proper recognition of their rights we condole with his afflicted family and with all who are bereaved by the departure of this thia grot gr and good man and trust that his rest re will be perfect and sweet |
