Show WOMAN SUFFRAGE the meeting of the utah woman Suf suffrage frace association at the assem bly y hall on thursday april 11 was well ell attended and the proceedings were highly interesting in the 9 absence of the president mrs marguret T caine who was unable to attend mrs lydia D alder presided and performed the duty ably d with ith becoming dignity A number of prominent ladies occupied the stand after the preliminary exercises including deluding prayer by the chaplain trayer mrs B sarah sam M kimball the min utes tes of the preceding meeting and the he names of the members were abad d by the secretary miss cornelia T D clayton and some amendments 0 o the bylaws by laws and other executive business us iness were submitted and voted upon the meeting was then addressed by MRS ZINA D H YOUNG who ho deplored the injustice ustice of deprie ig the women of utah of the right 01 01 suffrage which they had exercised for wt many years without abusing it the he mothers of the united states had ad always been found side by side with ith the men in their battles for in de indence VM Sn dence justice and right ho 10 implanted within the breast of tier W children the desire for a great d free government the mother we we look for the great government of the united states to again confer an us the god given right of suf bm e because by and with it we ul be enabled to do vast good to t hew e world orld for this we expect to extend contend we expect to reach out our hayans ends to D the women of america IM say we are one with you in this wad struggle MRS IDA IF GIBBS ad in substance i have always been an advocate of woman suffrage suit rage which I 1 con alder aa a god given right taxation and representation should always go to aether 9 e ther the rights of women are eternally y paramount with those of 10 raela en i heard a young lady not j ago say she would attend our gs if they bey were not so dry u she is uninteresting a poor ganan who will her own sex e referred to the great and glor of ous qa labors rs of the leading suffragists america sa samerica erica at one time in the 0 ly i history women were mere slaves but gradually they are bees ag their way and each year the t 6 an increased number espouse 10 cause of suf suffrage tage which ere S ag shall triumph they talk oh the e patience of men why days experience of the average man with t the he duties of a wife with iett grow u family would drive him we a lunatic asylum the more win will do for ourselves ourselves the more have t 1 the e opposite sex respect us I 1 too tog heard d it said that woman was taj it good 0 and dure to enter politics s ra she would rapidly be be t csc bics tics eared I 1 do not think so 80 pol cannot degrade woman but emall can elevate and purify there is everything to I 1 band and nothing to lose in the ute in which we are engaged I 1 do not believe that Itis it is necessary for a woman to neglect her household because she believes in woman suffrage the question of woman suffrage does not hinge U upon n the query as to whether the manoj majority r ity of women want it or not the question simply is whether the ri right 1 lit to vote is useful or beneficial I 1 if f it is so to man it certainly should be to women the next speaker called on by the president was BISHOP 0 F WHITNEY who said I 1 have consented to aln appear here today with considerable consid ue reluctance it was not because I 1 was unwilling to add my mite to a worthy cause but because I 1 feel eel plainly my inefficiency to speak in such a cause it is one to which I 1 have given but little thought and attention if I 1 am thankful for one thing it is that I 1 was born bom with a heart to a great extent free from bigotry and I 1 never could see why one portion of the human race should be denied the right of suffrage I 1 never could see those differences feren ces which some claim should debar woman from those rights rl me the rights which she justly c claims ins woman is the other half of man he is not complete without her and they should go hand in hand in every effort every rightful cause I 1 have always recognized womans comans claim as a just one and therefore did not feel called upon to champion her cause woman is the gateway by which we enter this world the same as christ is to the world beyond we cannot afford to ignore her who is the symbol 0 oi our mother earth and of the church of god and as we believe in the triumph orthe of the church of god we must believe in the triumph of woman she always has and does now typify the work and power of god the womans comans movement has come to stay I 1 do not believe in the advancement of man and the degradation of women we cannot separate man and woman she bhe is not to be idolized as a deity nor treated as a slave it would seem at times as though men in this age were endeavoring to make amends for the shortcomings of their ancestors if man is king woman is queen to idolize her ber as some do however is but the other extreme of the treatment received by her in days past why la Is it that we cannot teel feel that such rights as we desire should be extended to others the puritans rebelled against despotism and foug fought t for their own rights in bri britain ia an and d yet they came here and established esta sh ed a religious despotism I 1 marvel today thai that poets sing of the liberation of the negro and yet these great chain champions tons of liberty seem to be unable C to notice the outrages that have been perpetrated in utah women whose names are written high on the scrolls of fame who have sung for the rights of the black man have come here and yet gone away and slandered the women and the men of utah he deplored this and hoped for the time when justice should be done to all of both sexes here and elsewhere an excellent speech was then made by the delegate to the thena nar dional suffrage convention ahwash ington D C MRS FAMILY EMILY S RICHARDS many people suppose that the idea of woman suffrage was inaugurated by a few strong minded women who were anxious to vote this is wrong behind it all is the elevation of woman the obtaining of the political and other rights which to her belong we believe that its influence will be all important we believe that it is due to woman that she secure to herself all her social rights and privileges mrs richards quoted quite extensively from works on woman suffrage showing the objects that animated the first movers in the matter the women of today can hardly realize the C changes haffes that have been made within a few W years women are capable of filling all such light callings as printers re reporters editors photographers grap hers musicians etc during the last campaign women reporters did brighter and better work than the men and this without any resort to strong drink to keep them wg going the advancement that has been n made in the condition of women during the past few years has been the result of the faithful and arduous labors of a few noble members of our sex who were not afraid to face obstacles that would have probably deterred many from attempting to do what they have accomplished then again woman has haa a big work in the temperance cause and in this she can do greater and better work with the ballot than without it she then reviewed the good that had been accomplished complis hed by the national wo mans suffrage association while the general work has been coln going g on utah has not been neglected several of the members of the national homans womans suffrage association have appeared before the congressional committees and protested eloquently against the deprivation of the women of utah of the right of suffrage A well written address was then delivered ell vered by DR DB MATTIE P HUGHES the chief points made were that during the last thirty years a great deal has been accomplished woman has at last obtained from man her much deserved liberty once to be born bom a female was to become a slave now in the most intelligent and advanced circles woman has become the peer of man there is m much u eh however yet to be done b before e fore woman can enjoy perfect equality equalia having once enjoyed the liKe franc franchise and having it taken from us without cause is one reason why the women are so BO eager to again obtain it sex should not debar any one from a public office each man or woman should have the rl right ht to be the equal of each other if if they can women should not have more A rights ats before the law than man but all aff we ask is an equal political standing with the other sex she inveighed Inveigh ed strongly against the habit of women in spending so much time in frivolity fashions and trashy novels speed the day when woman shall have all her rights and knowing dare maintain them the next speaker was called upon as the president of the womans comans suffrage association of ogden MRS STANFORD she did not understand that the ladies of this organization claimed equal political positions with man they did not ask for these offices which men only were fitted to fill they claimed the right of voting the right to select men who are to make the laws which both sexes are required to obey women desired that such men should be honorable upright lit and truth loving she contended a that woman ought to be acquainted quain ted with political as well as other affairs and that the world would be better for her knowledge of and participation in them HON 0 W PENROSE was called upon and he explained that the r right lit r to vote aud and the right to h hold 01 d 0 office nce were not Iden identical tidal for cormany many years the women of utah exercised the former but not the latter he was in favor of making no discrimination against woman on the statute books T there ere were offices which women might be able to fill with ability and profit to themselves and the public there were others for which they were not adapted the good sense of the voters should determine this there were men who were not fitted for office but this did not debar them from voting he mentioned favorably a number of the leading ladies in the national woman suffrage movement and said he believed they were inspired to work for the elevation of their sex there was one mistake they made and that was in demanding as a natural right that which had been decided to be but a political privilege riv citizenship and the s suffrage e were distinct and separate every person born in the united S states is a citizen thereof A wife daughter au r or widow of a citizen even if 0 offu foreign reign birth is a citizen citizenship comes by birth or naturalization the right to vote is conferred by law A woman has as much inherent right to vote as a man but it is not in either the legislature prescribes the qualifications of voters if voting was an inherent right one would have a right richt to vote as soon as born bom the legal qualifications for botin voting differed jiff erect in different states ani and counties another mistake made by some so called strong minded women suffragists was in berating 6 the monster man from whom they expected to obtain the elective franchise this was not good policeto policy to say the least A great obstacle in the way was the feet fact that most of the women were either opposed or indifferent to woman suffrage the work before the association was to 8 spread d information and convert their air own sex when the women of the united states unite to demand the elective franchise they will get it he considered a mistake was made in trying for an amendment to the national constitution the suffrage was a matter for each state to regulate and if one oae state could be captured for woman suffrage others would follow and eventually all would come into line man and woman should be together in all things the male and female elements were found in all nature and they were so designed by the creator in the beginning and redeemed and exalted men and women were to have dominion together for all the ages of eternity HOW HON GEORGE Q CANNON having entered the building was requested to address the meeting he said I 1 take great interest in every question that affects men and women I 1 have always believed that if there should be any qualifications for suffrage sex should not enter women should have the right to vote equal with men I 1 have seen very many ignorant men exercise the right of suffrage when they knew aspittle as little about the questions involved as an animal and at the same time intelligent women were deprived of that right I 1 think this is a great injustice prohibition is is one of the issues of the times the question of intemperance to whom does it appeal most strongly who is most deeply interested the woman naturally it has a deeper interest for woman than anyone else womans comans voice in this thia and other affairs would doubtless have a most excellent effect I 1 do not think that because a woman was allowed to vote she would necessarily be called into service in the army or navy there are those who argue this way but I 1 think this is begging the question I 1 believe that there are offices that woman could fill 1111 and many that she would not want to fill for instance I 1 do not imagine that a woman would make a good constable to arrest men or a sheriff to hang men I 1 believe the right of suffrage would broaden the minds of the women of this country I 1 have never seen any effects in connection with woman suffrage to deplore the speaker referred to the goad good work performed by able women for their sex and to the voluntary defense of the people aple of utah by several notable ladies dies in washington he closed by saying I 1 pray god to bless you in this movement do not allow division or jealousy to arise in your midst but show to all that you are laboring for the advancement of a great cause MRS T G at the close of the present meeting an opportunity wm will be offered to all ladles who have not yet joined the woman suffrage association of utah to enroll their names with the secretary fully believing that in union is in strength we have associated ourselves with the national womans comans suffrage association so that we may more effectively prosecute the aim and end we have in view namely the enfranchisement of women and placing her upon a higher plane politically than she occupies today to become an aux auxiliary illarY of the national association we axe are required to pay a fee of 25 cents each for the first fifty enrolled bembe we are entitled to throe three delegates delegat est and for each additional twenty five members an additional delegate our enrollment should be as large SO as possible because we not only want to show to our eastern sisters that we are in real earnest and have the cause of womans comans political advancement at heart but it gives us greater influence in the councils of t the be national association at the last meeting of which we had two delegates to represent us and I 1 am pleased to say that our cause was most ably and au satisfactorily presented for the benefit of the 9 associations clario no now being formed throughout the territory who may perchance adopt our present bylaws by laws I 1 will say taft that after having worked under them wt for three months we find that they need amending this was under consideration at our last executive session and we hope soon to com and publish an amended bud ana more perfect set in placing our initial initiation ion fee at 26 y cents we were laboring under a nw mw understanding as to the amount per member to be paid to the national association now we learn that in W stead of it being 25 per cent olour of our fee it is 25 cents per member and asane as the matter now stands our treasury is empty of funds but to increase the fee now would be an injustice w to incoming members so it has been beell decided to allow the present charge for membership to remain to the theena elid of the year when the fee will be bead in |
