Show t sunday services religious services were held in the tabernacle salt bait lake city sunday ap april 11 14 1889 kommene J ing ng at 2 pm president angus M cannon presiding the choir and congregation sang adibe 0 glorious zion thou thon joy ot of latter days prayer by elder B P F cummings jr the choir sang softly beams the sacred dawning of the great millennial morn the sacrament was administered by the priesthood of the seventh ward APOSTLE JOHN W TAYLOR addressed the congregation should there be any strangers present today they may wish to know why we partake of the sacrament of the lords supper we do it in order to obey the injunction of the savior vao r this do in remembrance of me he told them they should not eat and drink again with him until they did it in his hip fathers father kingdom we believe we should partake of it worthily and when we so do oso so it is a witness that we hold no feelings against anyone when we have hard feelings against anyone we should not partake of the sacrament it is for saints and not for strangers and those who pass it around are instructed not to offer it to persons who are not members of the church the speaker read the articles of faith of the church and continued I 1 3 have read these articles to remind the saints of what we believe in and should practice and to give to strangers information I 1 wish to state briefly the views of the latter day saints concerning other denominations we believe that they all have much that is good and true but that them they teach much that is 18 erroneous we ve treat them with respect and accord them liberty of conscience we have in our community a a great reat variety of people ale who colre differ r an fn m complexion an and me stature yet we do not make such differences the occasion for quarreling I 1 use this illustration to show our views respecting spec ting differences in religious matters we believe that an appeal to the holy scriptures is the proper way to test all religious doctrines for the views of men are as varied as there are teachers amon among them it is claim claimed ed that the biale bible is like a musical instrument upon which any kind of a tune may be be played but I 1 never to take advantage of an opportunity to hear representatives of other denomination expound their views and Ilene I 1 generally rally hear something that is good goo truth is truth where eler eer itis found on christian or on heathen ground not having had an opportunity to associate much with he athens I 1 have obtained what truth I 1 have on christian ground I 1 trust the strangers present today will be fair and liberal the latter day saints believe in all truth and I 1 am always willing to receive a truth no matter where it comes from strangers generally feel prejudiced against us and to ask can anything good come out of odmor mor monism I 1 answer no if all reports about us are to be believed arts on n one occasion it was said of paul and his fellow laborers we know not who they are but they are everywhere spoken against and if we let them alone they will take away our place and nation we believe in the bible when it is open not when it is closed that is we believe it literally and not spiritually altogether we admit however that there are errors of translation in it isaiah predicted that in the last days the mountain of the lords house should be established in the tops of the mountains israel should be gathered there and taught the mind and will of the lord the north and the south are commanded to give them up every one who is called by the name of the lord we have among us today about sixteen different nationalities and the bhe book of mormon has been translated into about that many languages who has a right to publish this bithe gathering message no 0 one could have it unless god conferred conf ened it amos said that god would do nothing but that he would reveal his secrets to his servants the prophets but prophets are very unpopular nowadays now a days the christian world say there are aie no prophets now lot let us see we all have a light given us by which to determine right from wrong inthe in the scriptures we find the injunction search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which testily testify of me 11 we find also this promise he that boeth the will of the tee father shall know of the doctrine whether it be of god or I 1 of 1 I whether speak myself there are about six hundred different sects and it is claimed that the path each is following leads to the gates of heaven I 1 do not believe this doctrine for paul says there to Is but one bordone Lor done faith and one baptism paul in the fourth chapter c h apter of Ephe ephesians stans said apostles a and nd prophets were essential until the sa saints I 1 ants came to a falness of knowledge christ promised a perfect knowledge something more than a belief to all who would keep the commandments of god on the day of pentecost a vast assemblage sem blage of devout people from many nations heard the gospel each in his own tongue on that occasion peter promised that all who would be converted and baptized for the remission of their sins should receive the holy ghost what is the holy ghost the savior spoke of it as a spirit which would show things to come to persons SO possessing it such a person w would or of course be a prophet but we are now on the basis that there are no prophets paul said no man can say that jesus is the christ but by b the holy ghost the angel that came to john the revelator said to him the testimony of jesus is the spirit of prophecy 13 then if there are no prophets in what condition are we today the savior in order to test his apostles asked them whom do men say that I 1 the son of man am the apostles replied that they supposed him to be some great prophet risen again then jesus asked peter whom gayest thou that I 1 am then peter answered thou art the christ the son of the living god jesus said bleser art thou simon baraona Bar jona for flesh and bloodbath blood hath not revealed this unto thee but my father which is in heaven li eaven and I 1 say unto thee that thou art peter and upon this rock will I 1 build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it when phillip went to samaria many were converted by his preaching but the converts did not receive the holy ghost when the apostles at jerusalem heard that the samari ans had received the gospel two of their number peter and i ohn john went down to samaria they came laid their hands bands upon the heads of the persons whom thil phillip lip had converted and the converts received the do holy ay ghost if we are without prophets we have no holy ghost save the conscience given to each of us for the holy ghost is the spirit of prophecy I 1 wish to testify to this congregation that I 1 repented of my iny sins and went down into the waters of ba baptism for their remission and 1 I T 0 obtained a testimony by which I 1 know that jesus is the christ if any person will take the same course he can obtain the same knowledge I 1 bear this testimony not on account of my own merits but because of the goodness of god in the days of the savior the gospel was preached by men who went forth two by two without purse or scrip according to the instructions of the savior they were told that they would persecution se and that some would suppose that to kill them would be to render god service they were told to let their peace come upon the house which should receive them but to shake the dust off their feet as a testimony against such as should reject them to those who should obey the message they bore spiritual gifts should be given mormonism as it is is vulgarly called is the doctrine which christ and his apostles taught paul said if any man preach any other goal gospel 1 unto you than that which ye arave have received though he be an angel from heaven let him be ao accursed 5 he that boeth the things christ taught is like a wise man who built upon a rock the rock of revelation and the storms had no effect upon his house I 1 exhort you my brethren and sister sto be firm and steadfast in keeping the commandments of god and in the resurrection resurrects on you will be raised up and receive crowns of glory and immortal life the choir
