Show PORTLAND PLANT NEAR BRIGHAM MEANS GREAT BENEFIT TO THIS SECTION BIG DEPOSIT OF MATERIAL it may not be of general knowledge that right in ia the neighborhood ot of brigham city there Is a vist vast deposit ot of mate ilal that Is known as mail and which consists principally ot of carbonate ot of lime which is the tha principal ingredient that is used in the manufacture ot of portland cement it seems that it was reserved for sir air 11 C baker to discover this material callad marl and to arrange for the installation of a plant to utilize the same for the purpose of making portland cement within the memory 0 f the oldest inhabitant the barren flat north of brigham city which Is crossed by the oregon short line railway has been called alkali and indeed the surface of the barrens as the dry area tit lot box bos elder lake has been termed does have the appearance of alkali but in this instance it has been proven that the deposit within a certain area of the lake bed amounting to 1300 acres with a depth from the surface of 9 feet shows by chemical analysis to carry uniformly 81 of carbonate of lime and ai 71 j silica and 19 and lion oxide and there are no rebellious elements in the deposit this deposit of marl by itself has not the chemical elements in proper propositions to maks make portland cement but fortunately directly underlying this deposit of 0 marl is a blue clay by analysis shows that it contains 49 la in silica and 14 in and 3 in oxide of iron and this clay mixed in the proportion of practically one part of clay to tour four parts of mail caf I 1 makes a cement equal to the best english or german rort portland land cement mr air baker after he discovered jis covered that this material would make good ce ment mem caused an investigation to be made by henry 3 engineering company who are the leading scientific cement engineers and experts of the lehl lehi valley district in pennsylvania with headquarters and laboratories in philadelphia who spent sometime on the barrens of box elder lake making a thorough test of the deposit and shipped some soma of the material in casks to philadelphia where they made it into portland cement I 1 jt Is interesting to know what cpus NI isolated dej deposit of marl at this particular place and sir air baker explains it as follows follow ages ago and during the lake bonneville period a deposit of 0 blue clay was made over the surface of 0 salt lake valley during the period of recession of the waters whose high level can be seen along the sides of our mountains and which today are commonly termed benches subsequent to the lake Don bonnevalle donneville neville waters having havi ng found the present level of the great salt lake springs broke forth in the mountains and for formed druied creeks of greater or smaller sni aller volume and where many creeks join together at some point in their channels large were formed like the weber rand and ogden i livers ivors and dox box elder creek these streams of water took up different chemical elements in solution the nature of which elements I 1 largely depended upon the nature of the rock formations in which the springs fo forming these creeks and rivers had their origin it Is a wen well cnown tact fact that springs having their source in limestone formations will wl 11 first naturally take up in solution the lime element to the rejection of any other element that may be in the lime formation and it the stream is small in vo volume luffie the water may become thoroughly saturated with lime in so solution lulion in the case of larger streams the water will take up other elements simply from the fact that the stream may percolate through rock formations carrying silica and magnesia so that thai when the waters in the larger stream find the level of the valley ind and a quiet resting place placa the solutions are and consist of a mixture of ee elements ments that would not be in the required proportions necessary to make portland cement another tendency of large streams and rivers in rushing down the foothills in their channels is to carry along oarse coarse sand and gravel even down to the valley itself and any chemical element that might be useful Is so intermixed inter mixed with sand and gravel grave that it is not available in the case of very small streams there is not the tendency in flowing down the mountain side and along down the foothills to the valley to carry saud sand and gravel and therefore the water in the small streams finds a quiet resting place in the valley and precipitates its solution in a fine sediment that Is unmixed with coarse sand and gravel and if the he deposit so BO made is ot of value it can call bo be made available attention may be called to the fact that there are very few small streams that rise in the mountains that find their way vay ultimately to the quiet level of the valley and that are permanent streams most of the st streams reamis finding their way to the valley are large in volume there is one small stream however that has its source in a canyon in section 25 township 10 north range 2 west and that is the water that constitutes the water right connected with lake view ranch and which belongs to mr baker balcer this stream has its source in rising the non non lime stone ledges in the section mentioned and has tor for hundreds of ct years been carrying its burden of carbonate of lime lin in solution which has been leached beached out of these line lime stone formations and finally deposited in fit the bowl like depression of box elder lake the slope from the he mountain to the bed of the lake incidentally is neither too steep steel nor too level in its descent but has been steep enough to allow tile the small creek to convey in solution lis its carbonate of lime tree free of coarse sand or gravel due to the reason that natural conditions of source of the springs in lime stone volume of water carrying tile the solution ind and grade of descent to the level of box Do elder vElder lake were all in favor of making the deposit earning the chemical elements free of coarse material had the descent down the mountain canyon through which this creek lias has its channel been steeper than it is or had bad the creek been of larger volume even with the same waters would have had more speed and force and would have filled up the bed of the lake with sand and gravel mixed with this marl it would then have been unavailable and without value dox box elder lake is geologically ternary and very modern comparatively relative to the deposit of marl and the depression constituting the lake bed at the point where the small stream emptied is located close up to the foothills and the steady and con tinous flow of the waters of the creek for some hundreds of years has carried the carbonate of lime sediments down clown to their resting place and created this marl as it now exists in comparison with lime stone rock for making cement this deposit of marl can be handled handle J moie economically and a larrel barrel of cement can be produced at much less dost cost with the marl and clay due dua to the lie tact fact that there is no quarrying of rock necessary and the expense of pulverizing machinery required in a arock rock cement plant is entirely elimo eliminated eted the quality of the cement more than meets the standard requirements of the united states government the reason that the barrens are tree free of vegetation is that the SW 81 in fit carbonate of lime in the deposit of marl is such an excess of lime that vegetation cannot grow when the area of this deposit is quite dry it appears appeals nearly white on the surface but this is simply due to lime contents arid and not due to alkali mr daker baker has organized organize ct a company in new york called the wasatch portland cement company Compa siy and it is proposed to expend between aad d a plant on the tide west edge of the farm land of lake view ranch and about 1000 feet west of the county road with a daily capacity to produce 1500 barrels of portland cement this plant will give employment to men that will serve to increase business in this section and be of great benefit to the merchants of brigham city the company will have its office in brigham city which will together with the manufacture of cement at t le e works be under direct charge and the management of 1 mr W J bell who has been superintendent in fu of the newaygo portland cement company of newaygo midi making cement from marl but who hns has 6 engaged hil aged to become manager of this company A sample of the cement made by the henry 3 Company from tile the marl and clay in the deposit ma may y he be seen in wynn L eddys drug store window mr daker baker states that it is tile the intention to fo drill for gas in the vicinity to use as fuel in operating the cement plant for the scientific facts presented here regarding the properties of this marl we ae make use of the reports of the henry S Engi engineering nearing company df at philemel phia other mention of cause and effect are deductions based upon these rep repel oits ts editors |
