Show wit have paid some attention to the untruthful and deceptive methods employed by certain individuals to gain an appropriation of for the benefit of the industrial christian home association yf of utah aurre our readers ad will have observed that we have not opposed the establishment ot of any institution here for dependent women and children whether they are such as have renounced polygamy or not but we have exposed the means by which funds have been drawn from the public treasury for the e and which was simply obtaining money under false pretences pretenses jafe in proof of the cha chartre e have made we could cite from th congressional thy record a great deal of evidence but we do not wish to take up valuable space with a mass of abusive matter however ver as s a statement made by mrs angle F newman which appears in the congressional recard of october ad and which we cannot pass by without special notice it is as follows 0 on the second monday in march I 1 visited the penitentiary in salt lake city and addressed dressel ad 1 a great host of polygamous brethren these men are mostly incarcerated for a terra term of six months and therefore many such groups have come and gone since the famous rudger badger clawson case of which john T came caine had the temerity to declare before the committee it awas the last of which he had bad knowledge 1 I found in one oine cell 10 by 1 13 33 without floor six women three ot of whom nad ad babied under six mon months pa 8 of age who were incarcerated for co contempt the he paternity of their c ildrem when I 1 plead ped with them to answer the court and be released they said if we do there are many wives iland children to suffer the loss 1088 of a father la in another c cell ell were two girls one fourteen one sik sixteen teen each married to her own father both with babs and yet is a lost art I 1 I 1 the bare malicious falsehood of the last of these statements will strike all classes of oar cuine unity wita astonishment it not disgust di agust no such cases were ever known to i the courts of utah no such imprisonment appears on ahe records of the penitentiary no sucu suca occurrence was reported in any paper in this territory if su such c h ani things Ks bad been facts they would have been telegraph edwi t h sensational to ever every part of the united states and would have appeared with flaring headlines in all the newspapers tailing aming the press dispatches it is dimply an atrocious aud wicked fabrication for the purpose of extorting money in order to obtain information from official quarters tors a representative of the NEWs applied to marshal dyer warden pratt und nd mr doyle 0 one ne of the chief guards at tile the penitentiary tny they all the statement about the two girls incorrect and without any foundation in fact in conversation with H B clawson who is a public spirited citi citizen zeD man ager of the salt lake theatre and well known in business ou ainess circles circled we learned that he had bad seen the record and being startled with so terrible a charge in a public document he ad biased d r ed a letter to the united states alart marethal Marf thal al who mast have knowledge of the facts if they ever existed asking for a statement concerning them the marshal replied courteously to the edff effect ct that at the time named there were seven women in the penitentiary ifor or different of fences and that two of them on only ay were detained for contempt of court in refusing to answer certain questions put to them by the court touching their polygamous family relations the marshal said farther gi the statement as to the size of the room in which these prisoners were kept is about correct being so small as for it to be almost inhuman to keep female prisoners in such a place but it is the only place we have for that purpose there la is a floor on it however which is alwa always y s kept neat and clean dut but concerning the two girls ai rb another cell said to be married to their own father both with babes the marshal adds this as is wholly incorrect aud and I 1 lean can not understand how anybody could heart bare been so misled somebody must have made malicious mrs newman on this subject as we have never had any girls of this age confined in the penitentiary since I 1 have been marshal 11 A before replying marshal dyer took pains a i to have the records of the penitentiary ft e tiery examined so that bis big answer should be exactly correct this was not furnished for publication but bat as mr Clawso ws inquiry was jor public information w we do not think the marshal will object to this reference to his kreply we have felt some reluctance to mention mrs newmans name dome in connection with the shameful meane mean by which congress has been induced to appropriate money but bat since she has placed her own name before the country as authority for these schemes we are doing her no injustice in referring to her personally mrs newman has been lobbying at the capitol for some sometime time and has been circulating her slanders through the country seed ac compa with certificates as to her piety ety and christian character it will tak taka a treat many suca certificates to offset these falsifications and no number ot of them will count when every goal must appear for trial before the bar of eternal justice in her first statement quoted above mrs mra newman endeavors to place mr caine in a false light by repeating one phrase from aa araH argument Dent he be madje made some gome time ago beff a congressional committee and coupling it with something that had bad no proper relation to it mr caine was speaking in reference to new marriages the men to 0 whom mrs newman says she spoke were not imprisoned for that offense but for another and different offense off ense mr caise caine spoke tha th truth mrs newmans statement has the taint of ct falsehood her own remark that these men inda were incarcerated lor for a term of ate months proves that their cases were wet not similar to rodger Claw sona sons the penalty tor for which is a much longer term of imprison imprisonment meRt this attempt to td malign mr caine is just abt as contemptible coming from I a christian woman as if it were from an unregenerate erate man the second statement is also worded to carry a false impression the implication is that the six women mentioned were all in n polygamous rela eions and that three of them were al wives committed tor for contempt she aas she found them there the marshals statement contradicts hers and his is 18 taken from the record but the third statement is a whole cloth and wilful laise hood it 11 mrs newman was told this story atory by some malicious person jbv did she not say pay eke die was so informed the plain inference la is that she lound found these two imaginary young girls in another tell cell and she makes ithe statement of herself and over her own signature signa she his has repeated a greal many monstrous moa exaggerations about the mormons cormons Mor mons oo on hearsay at different times but this caps the climax of malicious misrop resent akion in the same memorial mrs newman quotes frem un alleged authority on utah affairs and makes further mia statements ane person whose name the she gives is not an authority but has i ft written itten a great leal deal of nonsense nuu nou sense on this pis showing his consummate ignorance of the principles and facts of mormonism but the wicked falsehood about the two iwo girls is not cited as coming from any au all dhority save her own and 11 all this NIS misrepresentation is made to con gros in behalf of the association and as the memorial of the industrial christian home association of utah 11 Is not this a very christian by which to t 0 draw sj irom the treasury Tred sury of the united states there are many misrepresentations in the documents presented to con coa kresa in connection with this matter lut but we do not wish to enlarge upon we would be glad to think that the author or endorser of them was simply limply misled but there runs so full avela of evident malice a and nd cunn cunning ing distortion of the truth throb through gli the whole body of her printed matter that we are prevented covering it over with the mantle of charity plain truth plainly told is the only present available arai lable antidote to the of uti nil mormon falsehood |
