Show AN ERRONEOUS STATE CORRECTED COUNCIL BLUFFS iowa october 10 1888 editor deseret news I 1 herewith hand you yon a letter submitted t to 0 me for that purpose by elder richard hill ot of independence Miss with the request you wll wall alte it an early ins insertion artion in the NEWS I 1 the letter of elders jenson stevenson and black misrepresents the josephites and makes the Hedric kites a party to such misrepresentation mr hill desires that you set him right before your readers and I 1 desire that your readers shall understand that the josephites Josep bites do not offer compromises for the sake of num numbers bera 04 respectfully yosei JOSEPH 11 SMITH oct 74 atu 1888 editor deseret news in the letter of andrew jinson janson edward stevenson and jos S black published by you in your issue of sept they represent that in the conference of the committees committe eE of the josephites and mentioned by them the josephites proposed to receive eliose those of the hed ric kites unconditionally some years ago the josephites invited them to appoint a committee of three to meet with a similar committee in behalf of the tor for the purpose of adjusting tu differences difference a ex bating g between the two fact faction iop in doctrinal matters the two committees met and the hed ric kites so our informant stated were given an opportunity port unity to join the josephites unconditionally the small difference in their religious belief being considered of no consequence by the committee representing the josephites the Hedric kites however disgusted with the propos proposition Alon dee declined fined as it was evident their friends were simply planning to become possessors of the temple lot in consideration of which they were willing to 0 oj ook cali ties in point of rell fall ing in this attempt we were bete formed that the josephite faction f bently given notice that t r suit against the Hedric edric kil ases ion of th the temp tern pie W ater say they are prepay prep and that they will not w get possession of the e pen dence as they land temple in ohio a f I 1 was myself the at therom cittee on the part c who attended the conference so appointed between ds us and th the josephites at its first session and I 1 hereby state that no such auch offer was made by the josephite committee the differences ol 01 belief were talked over and were discovered to be of such a nature that no agreement was reached and the two committees parted in good feeling subsequently to this I 1 reported to my brethren bre taren turen and W W blair G AN A blakeslee and S maloney of the josephites and G P F bisby george F hedrick and myself of the hedrick ites met at the house bouse of S maloney where the differences were again talked over and here again no buelk offer of unconditional reception was waa made by nor did I A near hear any such offer offar stated at any time whoever the informant may have been from writer of the letter published by you may have gotten awu information no statement was dade 1146 by me in to them nor was any mue by any of my brethren in my prel presence rence which could be correctly construed to mean as ne he ha IQ told it I 1 am presiding over the Hedric kite brethren in independence and know that the committee were not disgusted at this conference with the josephi ite committee nor do I 1 know nor did I 1 state that the meeting of the committee was an attempt on the part of af the josephites Josep bites to get possession of the temple lot it was held beld for the purpose of conferring upon di ferencek feren ces of belief as understood by both committees at the tim band for no 9 ber that I 1 am aware of if these Elders your correspondents understood the statements as they nave written them they have have thus thua misrepresented the matter matte r which I 1 regret RICHARD HILL president of the independence branch of the church of christ on inquiry from elder learn from him that the statement incorporated corp orated orsted in the letter which appeared in the NEWS of september aoth was made to himself and ana companions by a person whom they believed to te be well informed upon the subject and whose word they had bad no reason at the time to doubt he regrets the statement was accept accepted fol by them and used faed in the correspondence as himself and associates have no desire to misrepresent either the josephites Josep bites or hed ric kites by whom they were courteously treated we cheerfully give space to the correction ED D E N |
