Show historical founding of the southern utah mission ST GEORGE june jane 1 1888 editor deseret news in reading the semiweekly semi weekly NEWS ol of may I 1 saw a statement that he resident president snow in connection with george A smith and other elders was assigned to the task of building up tip southern utah this mission started from salt lake city november 29 1861 11 this mission was called at the semiannual semi annual conference of Octo october bei 1861 the counsel of president young to us was waa that whenever five wagons were ready we were id start on the road and not to wait on anybody as jae be considered it perfectly safe to travel with that number consequently I 1 being called got ready sold out my possessions in the sixth ward salt Sal lake city and started from salt lake city on the 1 2 of october not november with three wagons in compau company with brother robert thompson Thomp sao with w t h two wagons androse and joseph ph W johnson johnsoa of the fourteenth ward ard with one wagon we arrived in st george on the of november 1861 brother G A smith and prest frost snow passed ua buffon on the road and went to look out oat a location on the severain Se verkin berich bench near but gave it up and brother G A smith on n his return saw us in ash creek before president banow had returned he told me and brother thom thompson P a to come to st ceorge and settle there th orea which we did we were there alone some days d s then ivings ivin churchs churche and B V P Pendle Pend let tons DIS families came along and on the ath of december 1861 president snow arrived ai with a portion of ef his family in company with brother angus M and david wood burys barys john pamm wm win carter and others among whom were robert girdner gardner all camped tog together 0 ther out of do some in tents lents that winter and worked on the rio bio virgin ditch and tunnel which has up to 9 this time I 1 think cost between 50 and we laid off the city of st george a committee having been appointed for this purpose pur pese brother show was one of that committee we got a city charter we have had many obstacles to contend c on against agai ast president snow has been a father to the people his influence has been felt everywhere he will be missed the old men man are passing away but we have good men on the lead brother J G bleak has been the historian for this southern mission he can give many items of president snows history while here which would be to very interesting brother john pamm our postmaster came here when ben IAsi president dent snow did and he will substantiate what I 1 say so I 1 will let him add a few lines yours truly WILLUM WILLIAM FAWCETT the above statement is correct I 1 traveled down here with president erastus snows family and on december 1 1861 1 had a son born on the black ridge bidge near washington and with president snow rolled into camp december A 1861 we found william fawcett robert thompson and others had been in cam camp a few days ahead of us alost most respectfully JOHN nax |
