| Show POINTING TO THE FUTURE thim THE general conference of the young mens association whose sessions I 1 closed on sunday night was in many respects a grand occasion its fruits will be matured and reaped in the future ilg it gave evidence of a growing disposition among the young to keep in line with the greatest regenerative movement ever inaugurated on earth the establishment and maintenance in the world of divine truth to which all people are destined to conform this refreshing inclination was exhibited by the wide interest taken by the youth in the gathering so lately held in hk this city the associations extend throughout the ramifications of the gathered portion of the church every stake la in which the organization has been completed was reported statistically twenty six of the stake association were represented inthe in the persons of one or more of their presiding officers besides about preside presidents ats of branch associations there were in all in the neighborhood of TOO official representatives at the conference the sessions of which were largely attended by the members anc and people generally it was shown that much effective work had been done by the movement er in enhancing the pro progress g ress or of f the a yo young out ng in a direction that is ele elevating catl ng and yo d 0 of f a nature calculated to 10 e enlarge 1 I arge tair their e u usefulness se ful ness considering that this was the initiatory general gathering catheri n g in connection with the young men mens s movement the exercises were highly creditable the lectures generally speaking were of a high order and in point of ability would do credit to any aay assemblage As a rule they were to some extent detective defective in one particular we refer to the element of modus operandi operand the fields of research into which the youth should enter were in the subjective lectures most beautifully and ably portrayed some of the productions evi evincing neing marked intellectual power by some the gates leading to these delightful pastures were opened while others confined themselves al most exclusively to portrayals of their inviting and luxuriant growths however it is a gradual work to e ajar and enable the student to easily eater the enticing precincts it is t the e province of the associations not only to present proper fields of research and study but to classify the searchers and formulate proc processes esseff that will enable them readily to attain the objects of pursuit these two lines are distinctive tive and require directions of hought bought that are to each peculiar tile the young ask the questions in what direction shall we bend the energies of our minds this important question was largely answered at the recent conference the other to is what process shall we adopt to obtain the best results in the least practicable time as life is short that interrogation has only received a partial reply because it is the most difficult to satisfy it can be answered however but it will require concentrated thought close observation and assiduous labor the skimming process will not avail the best beat results in that regard cannot be achieved without bringing to the aid of thought and observation the handmaiden of those these prerequisites elpe experiment ament the best way to demonstrate the utility of a theory is to give it an application the result will determine its quality it if it is found impracticable it should be abandoned as worse than useless because while it remains it is but block in the way of a more effective process when theories are formulated and adhered to simply because they appear to be the best on the sur aur is impeded their actual fruits constitute the test of effectiveness or inadequacy we should say therefore that abot only the formulating of methods but the practical testing of them with the view to permanent adoption or rejection should be the leading consideration in connection with this inis great movement A school master with a good intelligent system and the ability to operate it will advance his pupils much more rapidly than one of greater educational attainments attala meats who works upon a less lesa effective plan so 80 it is in everything pertaining to education this movement presents a glorious field of action for all who have the ability to enhance its interests the foundation of phenomenal progress the disposition odthe of the young to advance Is is here acre that they must mast and will progress and fit themselves lor for the mighty labor that confronts them is beyond question the very inclination referred to readers that a foregone conclusion and while the rate of speed at which they will travel will depend largely upon the persistent efforts they put forth themselves it can be markedly affected by the aid extended them in the form of intelligent practical thought and labor of taase who being more matured can mark out bathe paths which they can tread with prone I 1 t the late conference will give the movement a potential impetus it was an occasion that will stir up the youth to the necessity ot of aron arousing sing to a sense of their responsibilities that they may act like men in the mighty struggle between light and darkness |
