Syria fhnj to a The citizens of America can be pretty narcissistic, What other country glorns onto other nations to force them to follow their cultural lead? What other country has something to say about nearly every - conflict going on, as if playing Mama Nation trying the kids in line? What other nation assumes to keep of citizens other countries must be unhappy simply I because they don't live there? r United States involvement in Syria is nothing but a vain attempt to uphold America's image as the leader in, well, everything. News flash: We aren't. The United Nations was created at the s lggestion of an American president. Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1945. It has four main purposes, as posted on www un.org: 1. To keep peace throughout the world 2. To develop friendly relations among nations 3. To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms 4. To be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals The U.N. is the organization that moderates between nations, and any retaliation against Sy ria is its domain. Frankly put, it is illegal under international law for the U.S. to attack Syria. Obama has tried to rile up Americans, saying the U.N. is wasting time with investigating. Having just gotten out of an and badly planned military campaign in Afghanistan, you would think Americans, especially Obama, would be all for investigating before blowing things up. Also: While the world talks and debates about whether or not the U.S. should attack Syria, Syria has been given time to build up its defenses. It's not like Syria is deaf or politely waiting for a possible attacker to figure itself out. Maybe someone should show Obama the clip from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where Sir Robin runs cough cough away from d the arguing knight. America seems to have taken it on as her moral obligation to protect and further the aims of humanity. That's all fine and dandy, but if ve were really hoping to further the aims of humanity, w e would be pushing the U.N. to speedier action, not taking things into our own hands. Obama has done us all the favor, as he magnanimously pointed out, of following the American system of government for once. He is actually asking Congress for permission before he does something. It's time we also follow the U.N. This and future problems could be more efficiently solved if the world worked together, instead of watching as America goes over the heads of every other nation. 8 t ... neu level ... 586-548- ' ; : r i i j ! under-investigat- ed three-heade- The opinions expressed above are the collective perspective of the University Journal Editorial Board. The registrar's office literally had and during that time, I did a lot of editing, writing, to create the "intern" class just for me.
