Show Semesters may be at hand information and delve deeper into (continued from page 1) "I know that there are some departments on campus that are against the semester system," Heath said, "I would like to be able to hear from individuals or departments that had reasons not to support the switch." "Having taught under both quarter and semester calendars I would have to lean toward the quarter system," said f. Steve Taylor, professor of technology. "It limits the curriculum from a 'nice to know' to a 'need to know' basis." Taylor said that he prefered the quarter calender because classes meet more often and he said that he feels like the information is fresher in students minds. "No matter which system you use," Taylor said, "students will still wait until the night before to do their homework. Besides, if you're in a class that you are suffering through, 10 weeks is a lot easier than 14 or 15. It works both ways." Indeed, it does work both ways. Michael Stathis, assistant professor of behavioral and social sciences, said that as a professor he would prefer the quarter system. "There would be one less block of lesson plans to prepare," said Stathis, "not to mention a longer summer. However, for a student, the semester, I believe, is much more ideal because it gives you the chance to digest a given subject." According to Richards, even if the Regents decide to approve the proposal at their monthly meeting Jan 26 at Salt Lake Community College, SUU probably would not start classes on a semester calendar until fall of 1998. A benefit peculiar to SUU is that the Utah Shakespearean Festival would see a huge savings in its expenses. Currently, the Festival spends some $150,000 per year to house the company in local motels while student housing (largely the College Avenue apartment complex) is occupied by SUU students between the arrival of the company during the first week of May and the availability of apartments during the second week of June. "Of course," said Festival Managing Director R. Scott Phillips, "we would have a similar problem at the close of the season between the time school starts around August 25 and the close of our season at Labor Day, but those costs would be less than half because it's a shorter amount of time and the company has shrunk a great deal by then as many members jobs have been completed." Also, as with many other schools on quarter systems, students are not on campus to take advantage of many fall activity opportunities, including home football games. The switchover would solve that shortcoming. Semesters Vs. Quarters 1 Perceived advantages of the semester and quarter calendars are summarized below, compiled from studies and reports submitted by both Utah and institutions that have studied this issue in recent years. Semester Calendar Quarter Calendar Depth of study in subject matter courses Breadth of study by taking more Time to digest and retain material Flexibility and more student options Time for library study and term papers Forced time management for students Improves student retention More opportunities to start and stop Eliminates one dead week, exam week, and registration period - more time for instruction Students have another break, chance to regroup and start over Better use of textbooks (usually designed for semesters), and reduced student bookstores textbook costs Students access to more textbooks and greater textbook revenues for Earlier spring completion date helps students in job market Later starting time allows students to work later in the fall Lower administrative costs - one less registration period, including computer time, book orders, publications, etc. Cost of conversion not required Fewer course preparations for faculty Flexibility for research faculty Majority calendar - facilitates transfer, concurrent enrollment and coordination with public schools Established calendar - faculty and students are used to it Opportunity to rethink curriculum, renew and refine offerings Conversion requires time, effort, cost and adjustment Supplied by the Utah System of Higher Education t I 17 i" JuMB 2-ToD- j LARGE 1 JUMBO Pizza with ovar pound of ehoosa and your choice of two tantalizing topplngsl PICK pick Large Pepperoni YOIIR FEASTI Por j sflfFftaa !
