MARCH 24, 1993 PAGE 5 LLJgTHM&5 Lopez is encouraged to resign early TO THE EDITOR: I ' question their motive and integrity (if they even know what that is or if they have any at all)... I think these subversive activities reflect on the participants as well as their families. Didn't your motlte rs teach you not to lie? What ever happened to personal integrity? Has it been lost in the scramble for power and influence? (Matthew J. Lopez, Arts and Letters Senator-elect)- . Well Mr. Lopez, you have been caught. Let me help you remember what went on during election week. In your headlong rush to election glory, you talked to quite a few Theatre majors and minors, and probably unbeknownst to you, many GLB members as well. You even went as far as to put a flier in every Theatre majors mail box! You promised a lot of things, Mr. Lopez. Anything coming back? In your campaigning, you said to me, and quite a few others (I dont drink I have to mention any names do I?), and I quote, I may not support dreir (GLB) ideals, but I do and will support their right to be here on campus. Do you remember diis? I now turn around and read die letter you apparendy signed in die March lltli ThunJerbird. You talked of integrity. Where is yours? You talked of being taught not to lie. Why did you? It seems diat you have lied to get votes making you no better than diose who you so recendy condemned. You can not that you support the club's right to be here on campus, and then state that you would appreciate the removal of your name from any fundraising lists or gadiering lists of die University or Shakespearean Festival" (March say 1 1 di) because you feel it would be to continue inappropriate if this monetary support becomes officially organization 911 S. I feel betrayed and hurt diat you would use such tactics just to get into office. How can you continue your duties as Senator if you have lied to get where you are? I laugh at your integrity, 1 laugh at your values, and, I laugh at you. Well, sir, to make a long story I, as well as quite a few others in die College of Arts and short, Letters, ask for your immediate resignation as Arts and Letters Senator for the 1993-199- youre taking one of these tests, take Kaplan first. 3 for more information. Robert Richardson Everyone deserves representation TO THE EDITOR: rights My purpose in writing diis letter is to clear up any misconceptions diat there may be in regards to my reasons for signing the petition opposing the GLB club on campus. The first reason is clearly stated in die petition: We cannot in any way support the activities and beliefs in which diey (homosexuals and bisexuals) engage. This means that I myself do not agree with homosexualbisexual practices. This in no way means that I am biased against as homosexualsbisexuals individuals. They have die rights to choose their own lifestyles, to assemble, and to receive equal representation under die U.S. Constitution. As I honor and sustain this document, I will not discriminate against any person or group of people. Since I am myself of an ethnic minority, if I discriminate against others, I become what I hate. Therefore, I support the GLB in that everyone deserves equal representation and the right to assemble. This has been my stand from the beginning. The petition further states that we recognize the and freedoms of homosexuals and heterosexuals who participate in and support such a group, but that same inherent liberty that permits diem to publicly engage in die activities they feel to be just is the same liberty that permits us to oppose diem." Therefore, die GLB has die right to form, thereby voicing the opinions and beliefs of both homosexuals and bisexuals, and I have the right to formally oppose diese practices by voicing my own beliefs. Thus, the same right that homosexuals have to make a moral statement in favor of the right to assemble and to be fairly represented, is the same right I call upon in stating my beliefs dirough a formal petition. I am not trying to take away die rights of anyone rights which are for under the provided Constitution. If one man loses his freedom, we all lose our own. But this does not mean in any way that I condone what others may do when they engage in their respective practices and beliefs. I feel that diere is a great deal of suspicion and distrust throughout the entire campus regarding this issue. I see students against students because one group of people does not understand the odicr. People are inherently afraid of what they do not understand. I believe that there is a lack of understanding evident on both sides. My question is this: what can we do together in order to dissipate this fear that exists? I may not subscribe to die same ideology as homosexuals and bisexuals, but I am willing to represent diem. I am willing to work with and for diem so that diis distrust and any misconception is avoided. The people who are calling me a bigot and biased seem to have forgotten that EVERYONE, including myself, has the right to express what diey feel whether it agrees with anodiers point of view or not. do not abide by the homosexual ideology, but I feel I diat I can represent diem. I believe that representation has no bearing on the representatives moral positions. Representatives are to be objective and are to mediate between and represent their constituents without regard to the constituents beliefs andor actions. Matthew J.
