Show COMMENTARY Tl lETHUNDERBIRD SOUT1 ILRN UTAH UNIVERSITY WEDNESDAY, REAL WORLD' ARRIVES IN CEDAR he GLB club may not be in tradition with conservative life, but so far as the the club does not practice reverse discrimination, it has a right to gather as a group on campus. A recent letter to the editor draws support from the hard- working individuals with strong moral and spiritual convictions of the community, and strongly denounces the newly formed Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual club that has sparked controversy on the SU campus. SU is actually the last of Utahs universities to receive a request for recognition of a campus gay organization. Legally, SU cant deny the formation of such a club if the club meets all of the university requirements for recognizing clubs. There may be opposition, but this is the real world. Mills states that Cedar City and that this community gratefully is not the real world, does not deserve to be subjected to the individuals that have organized a club for homosexuals. He also asked the reader to picture two gays or lesbians having sex, a crude and unnecessary request. Atheists have sex, minorities and interracial couples have sex, teenagers have sex, your parents have sex, and yes, gays and lesbians have sex. These couplings may not agree with Mills ideas about normal sex, yet they will occur. The mistake that Mills is making is that the issue focuses around the sexual act itself. The GLB was supposedly not formed to have wild orgies or discuss kinky-setechniques, but as a forum for people with a differing sexuality to meet together. Most often, gays are basically ordinary people looking for fulfilling relationships, emotionally and spiritually as well as sexually. They are not raving loonies who randomly pick up on members of their same sex and harass them. There are exceptions, but men raping women is a more severe problem. Gay people arent striking out at straight people. Instead, in the streets and badmouthing homosexuals at every opportunity is the reality. No one is trying to coerce you into anything, after all. If you dont ski, dont join the ski club. If youre not homosexual, you don't have to join the GLB club. Yet, some people are trying to coerce others into fitting their ideals. Perhaps they should consider, as well as the individuals with strong moral and spiritual convictions Mills mentions, that bigotry and intolerance are far worse qualities than homosexuality. Cedar City is a small town, but its not encased open-minde- d x g in glass. The real world demands attention, and it has arrived in Cedar City. If you should encounter a gay, black, athiest who contradicts all of your values, realize that you dont have to invite him to dinner. flag-burnin- Judge not, lest ye yourself be judged TO THE EDITOR; My letter is in response to Mr. Mills criticism of die GLB here at SUU. Robert Bogue Stop judging moral actions of others TO THE EDITOR; illtillKM CEDAR CITY, UTAH only wishes people to speak freely when the words are coming from your mouth. First of all, it is clear that you haven't die slightest understanding of die real world" or even of diis world. Radier, you seemed to be living in your own world" and its I am so tired of all the contention on campus in response to the Gay and Lesbian Club! The letter written in the last edition of this paper entitled GLB Should Offer Counseling was the final straw! 1 am thankful that I am able to attend a college in a safe and clean" community, but the dose-minded- " attitudes surrounding here are definitely a negative point in Cedar City. Why is there such concern as to whether diere is a club for gays and lesbians on campus? Those of us who do not have die same sexual preference as die members of this club will not be forced to and join, actually will not even be affected by it. The way in which the writer of GLB... asked his readers to imagine the sexual intercourse homosexuals of was crude and disrespectful. Homosexuals are human beings and they are entitled to the some rights we all are, regardless of their personal morals. We all are living on this world together and we need to be accepting. Just because a does person accepts homosexuals will not mean that he or she become one. I think it is time for us all, myself included, to stop the actions judging the morals and of others. We should be more concerned with how we are living our own lives. The prejudice against homosexuals in this country wt lead nowhere. And as for having mind... 1 would rather an open have an open mind than and hateful. ignorant, prejudiced, Melissa Wilkinson e |
