Show PAGE 8 THE THUNDERBIRD SUSC THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1990 SU Senate discusses more Library hours (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3) request made by RHA so members can attend the convention in Flagstaff, Ariz. Sen. Loni Costello, who headed the bill investigation, said RHA raised most of the necessary funds for the trip and only needed money for transportation costs. She said that the club has raised $75 of the $400 they volunteered to raise in behalf of the Library fund. Clubs and organizations are asked to raise funds, thereby showing their committment to the school. Clubs which raise the funds for the Library will actually be given more credence than those not g efforts, said ASSUSC Academic Vice making President Mark Holyoak. Funds granted will be used for the students transportation costs only. Representing the Literary Guild, Kay Lynn Mangum requested funds in behalf of the Literary Guild. Citing the group as a service organization, she asked for funds to pay the cost of inviting two poets and one author to speak here. The $800 requested would be since the writers would benefit the students as well as the community, said Mangum. The money goes toward bringing writers to Cedar City, their expenses while here and the cost of the honorarium. Being where we are located, we dont have the opportunity others have at larger schools. They have four or five, were only asking for three, she said. The authors are helpful for all writers on campus, Mangum said, including English majors and those who hope to be authors someday. The authors return to their homes and tell others they meet about the students at SU, she said. Most of the authors are impressed with students here because they are so aware of what is going on and are attentive, she noted. The bill will be circled and posted this week for a decision next Monday. Intercollegiate Knights representative Don Davies requested $200 for advertising expenditures to promote the 15 various activities the club plans. Davies said the club is asking for less than $10 per activity. p The activities include 13 seminars, including one on and a blood drive. improving family communication, a But, in order for them to be effective and recognized, we need to advertise, said Davies. Senators will discuss the bill during their Oct. 22 meeting. Senators perused the idea of extending the regular Library hours. Student Gary Mund said he would like to work to open the Library for seven more hours per week five on Sunday and two on Saturday. With the increased student body, said Mund, there is not enough time for everyone to access the computers and other Library materials. d Smith said, As a university, we should not fall behind. Other universities already have long hours. More investigation will be made into the extended hours possibilities before senators make a decision m Mondays meeting. Proposed time changes would make the hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays. fund-raisin- im T, well-spen- t, Jotoo Jimanon t A M Ph Sociology EoHhom Coilog Sociology Umvomty of Virginia 0 Condidoto Sociology.
