Show THE THUNDERBIRD Ambassadors needed represent SUSC and give tours to prospective students, said Missie Wilson, program organizer. Student must have attended SUSC for at least two quarters and have a 2.5 cumulative GPA to be an ambassador. A committee will review applications and conduct interviews with the candidates to determine those with the positive first impressions, said Wilson, because with the prospective students, the first impression is the only one they may make. Wilson, a transfer student from Snow College where there is currently an ambassadors program, said she began the group here to become involved. The purpose of the ambassadors is to make new students feel a part of the campus, she said, and not just like theyre important only for tuition and fees. Its not how great the school is, its what the people are like. New students should be able to get information they need. If they have a certain interest in something, I want the ambassadors group to find out, said Wilson. The committee is looking for students who are outgoing, sincere and dependable, Wilson said. And, the more leadership abilities the person has, the more qualified he or she will be, she said. Although Wilson is working through student government to start the program, it is not for current student leaders only. I want to stress that everybody is eligible. This is for students who want to get involved in student government who arent already, she said. As part of their duties, the ambassadors will give tours of SUSC to those students visiting SUSC, to orient them to the campus. We want to add a personal touch to the students life. Although only two quarters of enrollment are required, said n students will have an advantage. Wilson, upper-divisio- University gala slated Changing from a college to a university can only happen once, celebration to mark so SU officials are planning a the occasion. Because the name change becomes official Jan. 1, 1991, the University Gala to mark the event will also be a New Years Eve party. Chaired by SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt, a committee is already busy laying plans for a bash that will include dances at three locations and a fireworks display over the campus at midnight. According to committee member Vaughn McDonald, assistant to the president for college advancement, preliminary plans call for a Grand Buffet in the Student Center from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dance with big band music will be held in the Centrum, a band and dance is scheduled for the Harris country-westerPavilion and a rock n roll dance sponsored by ASSUSC will take place in the P.E. Building. There will also be floor shows at all three dances, as well as commemorative mementos for those attending. At present, the committee is aiming for an attendance of at least 1,000 people. Were still in the early stages of planning, McDonald said. Well gain a better idea of how many people want to attend as we get further along. With the Centrum, Pavilion and P.E. Building available, and Thunderbird Circle open four hours for the buffet, we can accommodate thousands of people if need be. As midnight approaches, there will be a countdown and at precisely midnight, New YearsUniversity Day, a gigantic fireworks display will light up the skies over the athletic field between the Centrum and the Harris Pavilion. According to McDonald, an important aspect of the celebration is that all proceeds will be used to create endowed scholarships for the growing enrollment at the new university.
