Then at the end of the quarter all of the physical tests are given again. The level reached is the final grade. The physical portion of the class is 40 percent of the overall grade. The other 60 percent is based on attendance, classwork and written tests. It wouldnt work to simply base the students grade on improvement because you would have people who wouldnt even try the first time then would give it their all at the end of the quarter. You would also have some people who are in excellent shape who wouldnt improve the whole quarter, said Lopour. He said, We are getting a lot of flak from the and theyre the ones who need it the most. The purpose of the class is to wake people up to the fact that they are in bad shape. Fitness for death? We are trying to change that image. If they have that sort of attitude towards being physically fit now, imagine what their lives are going to be like later, Lopour said. The change was made because a limited number of students a who dont like large portion of which were physical activity started complaining, said Steve Lunt, PE department, head. We are doing this to help these people. We arent trying to torture them. I think a lot of the students fear that if they dont perform like an athlete they are going to fail and thats not how it works, he said. Lopour said, Alternate programs are set up for students who are handicapped in one way or another and we even base our levels on a scale adjusted for the altitude here in Cedar City. Head athletic trainer and PE instructor Ben Davidson said, Its like taking a chemistry class. You have to go into the lab to learn and understand the really important things. The purpose of the class is to help all students have a basic understanding of what it means to live a physically fit life. This would fit into the idea of the student which is what general education requirements are trying to do, he said. ASSUSC President Julie Stuart said, I think the physical part of the class is important, because if you just learn the strategies or principles of a sport or activity you dont really understand it unless you get out there and perform that activity. However, I think maybe this part of the class should be graded on participation. ASSUSC Representative Sharon Holmes said, (The physical part of the class) needs to be graded on more of an individual basis. A lot of these students are here because they have some sort of a problem be it physical or is just as important as being emotional and their physically fit. SUSC student Andrea Queveo, a junior majoring in sociology from Hurricane, is participating in the class activities but is not enrolled. She said, I think the activities are important to the class because the tests they do on you prove to the students that the activities actually work. The physical education department plans to present an alternate proposal to the administration before the change is implemented. well-round- otu&cu) OCT. 13, 9-1- 2 P.M 1575 West 200 North, Cedar City, 586-888- 8 self-estee- (fault frw 041 j ail (C CfOWl...
