Finney told Thursdays Convocation audience. Between one-hal- f d of this nations population has been abused before the to age of 18. In this room I would say that percentage is even higher. If youve been abused youve survived the worst and even if you dont think so, youre stronger for having lived through that. Finney stressed the point that abused people are still normal, and that there should be no social stigmas attached to those who have been abused. The only thing different about people that have been abused is that they have lived through the horrible experience, she said. Finney admonished abused students to seek help, even if they have had bad experiences w ith previous therapists. There are qualified peope out there that knou how to help you, and going through therapy doesnt mean you have to give up ears of your life for torment. You can still enjoy the other parts of your life. If you think youre going crazy, youre not. You would have gone crazy when you were a child, when you had less resources, and perhaps died as some victims have. She added, The effects of abuse are totally curable, but people do not just outgrow abuse. Parents like to think that the kid will forget and not have any bad effects, but that is not true. You just cannot ignore the symptoms of abuse, and the most damaging symptom is the chain of abuse. Victims go on to abuse children. Not all victims of abuse go on to abuse their children, though, Finney said. There are three possible roles that victims tend to acquire. They can remain a victim and keep replaying the victim role, become a victim lzer and repeat the cycle, or start being a rescuer and try to help others, which becomes dysfunctional when done to the excess, she said. Finney noted that sexual abuse is at the base of such social problems as prostitution, homelessness and crimes of violence. She suggested that We should start spending money on healing the sexually abused, which would m turn reduce the costs we spend on the problems that stem from that abuse. Yes, we will have duplicate costs for a while, but we cannot afford not to children are our future, she said. one-thir- S50 DdJEUOa til THE MEAL DEAL I s I I i a THE MEAL DEAL I $2" Buys any Regular Footlong Sandwich and a medium drink K E s g 99 I e Buys any Regular Footlong Sandwich and a medium drink FOUR LOCATIONS 667 S.
