Show THE THUNDERBIRD Cinderella tale holds true SUSC THURjp''r',,gER PAGE 27, 1990 13 i i BY WENDY BENTON It may be the typical Cinderella story. The handsome prince sweeps the beautiful dancing princess off her feet. But in the fairy tale the prince never had to take a ballroom dancing class. James Cotts did. Cotts, physical science associate professor, took ballroom dancing from Terri Lauterbach, assistant professor of physical education, and, although the couple had known each other for a couple of years prior to that, it was only a matter of time before they began dating. He never had an interest in ballroom dancing, in fact he doesnt like to dance, he says. But the only way to gain her interest was to swallow his pride, show up for dance class and practice his dip. I never danced, says Cotts. I had to take ballroom dancing in order to date (Terri). Though somewhat wryly, Lauterbach adds, Hes starting to be able to dance a little. The fairy tale couple will be joined in holy matrimony on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in St. Judes Episcopal Church at 354 South 100 West. Lauterbach swears there isnt a gimmick involved with the timing of the ceremony. Homecoming is not traditionally taken as a literal crossing of the threshold. President Sherratt said we could get married at halftime of the SUSCCal State Northridge football game and parachute in, but we said no, says Cotts. Both admit there are a few added bonuses to marrying a colleague, besides the obvious savings on the insurance rates. We have the same interest in attending the college sporting events and the theatre, says Lauterbach, and though its not particularly a benefit, it will be difficult not to carry campus problems home and talk about them. Another problem Cotts sees is that professors are always in the public eye. Theres no anonymity. Everybody knows me and everybody knows Terri. These two, not necessarily thought of as rebels, have nevertheless committed to an undertaking that few in the past have dared. Perhaps it is because working together does not ensure a happy life living together. But Cotts and Lauterbach say they are definitely willing to try, and certainly hope that happy endings are not just the stuff fairy tales are made of. v 1 4 M Ji s Jbtt Terri Lauterbach, assistant professor of physical education, and James Cotts, associate professor of physical science, plan to dance their way into one anothers hearts during Homecoming Week. r yuf 'w t m & J iJJilDULljCl LSijQOS lixDUnOQf 4M E. r.lincrsville Hvy. 5C&-I30- 3 Expires Oct.
