Prior to joining the Reagan Administration, Speakes career included service as a newspaper editor in Mississippi, press secretary to a United States senator, an executive for an international public relations firm, and press assistant to two other presidents. He attended the University of Mississippi, majoring in journalism g and, from 1961 to 1968, edited newspapers in Oxford, Cleveland and Leland, Miss. In 1968, he went to Washington, D.C., as press secretary to Sen. James O. Eastland of Mississippi and also served as spokesman for the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Eastland chaired. In 1974, Speakes joined the Nixon Administration as staff assistant to the president and then was appointed press spokesman for the Watergate legal defense team. After Nixons resignation in August 1974, he became assistant press secretary to President Gerald Ford, serving until 1977. Speakes also served as press secretary to Sen. Bob Dole during his campaign for vice president in 1976. After Ford left office, Speakes worked as vice president of the Washington, D.C. office of Hill and Knowlton, an 'international the political arena in 1980 public relations firm. He when he worked for the Reagan-Bus- h campaign, and became deputy press secretary when Reagan took office in 1981, and ultimately served as White House spokesman longer than any person since Press Secretary James Haggerty in the Eisenhower Administration. After leaving the White House in 1987, he became senior vice president of Merril Lynch & Co., in New York City where he directed the companys worldwide communication and advertising program.
