Show Sports & Outdoors SOUTHERN UTAH STATE COLLEGE, CEDAR CITY THE THUNDERBIRD Utes THURSDAY, PAGE MAY 3, 1990 10 wins UN-ear- n BY BRENT RICHEY Coach Joy Peterson said they didnt deserve to win. Eight errors, several other mental errors, and 14 runs given up was the reason they didnt. We didnt play well enough to win, said SUSCs softball coach after her team dropped two games to Utah yesterday, and 10-- 2 4-- Even though the Utes scored 10 times in the first game, only one of the runs was earned. Utah scored on throwing errors, fielding errors, judgment errors and once on an actual run batted in. Genie Turley got the loss but pitched most of the game with a nerve injury in her elbow. The injury caused a loss of feeling in her pitching hand. She loaded the based in the first inning, and the Lady Utes took a lead after one. SUSC grabbed two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Diane Cobey singled and scored on a Leslie Varoz triple. Varoz then came home on a single. The game stayed remained 2 until Utah broke it open in the sixth. After loading the bases on two singles and an error, the Lady Utes scored one at a time and took an 2 lead through six. The second game was more of the same in the opening two innings. Utah led 0 after two. In the bottom of the second, SUSC loaded the bases but couldnt hit them in. The third inning was a repeat as the Lady stranded three more. Competitive nature is what I call it, said Peterson. The lapses are the problem. Were having experienced ball players make mistakes. Im really critical of our concentration powers. BYU makes a trip to Cedar City to face the Thunderbirds has four games remaining tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m. SUSC (24-1on this seasons slate. After the BYU double header, the Lady 'Birds travel to Utah State May 7 to close the year. 3-- 0 3-- 8-- 4-- ' 6 ' sS' SU catcher Tnna Packard does a good job of blocking the plate, but a throwing error allows the run P to score.
