College officials predict that as Brigham Young University tries to limit its enrollment growth, those students who are turned away will apply to SUSC. In an attempt to cap student enrollment at 26,400, BYU continues to receive many more student applications than it can accept. Enrollment exceeded the limit by 712 during fall semester 1989. Applicants turned away because of enrollment limitations are being referred to other Utah institutions and Ricks College, said Jeff Tanner, BYUs associate dean of admissions and records. BYUs admissions staff has met with admissions directors of these seven referral institutions, including SUSC. We talk about what their criteria are and the kind of student were not able to accommodate, Tanner said. "This kind of student is usually above what their admissions critera are, and they say, If you have students above this level, then send them; wed love to have them. Tanner said BYU recommends that freshman with a B average and ACT score in the 20s should apply. These students still might not be admitted, but will be offered options of being added to a waiting list, attending evening classes or having their application referred to another institution, he said. SUSC is a state-ru- n school with an open-doo- r admissions policy, said Stan Torgersen, SUSCs coordinator for high school and transfer relations. Taking the ACT and providing a high school transcript are requirements for SUSCs entering freshmen. Any exceptions must be reviewed by the vice president for student services, Torgersen said. Everyone is given at least one chance to attend and succeed at college, he said. D. Mark Barton, director of admissions and records at SUSC, explained, We have worked with the students BYU has referred to us to see if we could help them in a transfer relationship. Next to BYU, SUSC has the highest percentage of Mormon students of all four-yea- r Utah institutions, Barton said. Tanner said this percentage is not really a factor in referring students, but its not bad. He said, If you do have a high percentage then its certainly not going to hurt transfer students. He agreed that one of the biggest motivations for attending BYU is its religious affiliation. Barton said, We are not just accepting LDS students; that is not the situation. He also said SUSC officials are willing to talk to any interested transfer student from any institution. Tanner said BYU would not give SUSC any preferential treatment because of its number of Mormon students. He said, We dont know (SUSCs) percentage so we cant tell the transfer student that information unless the institution provides us with it to mail to the student. We have no way of communicating (the percentage of Mormon students) except in broad, general terms. SUSC officials plan to pay postage and printing costs for BYU to send brochures about SUSC to interested students, Barton said. The percentage of Mormon students will not be included in the e brochure; doing so would be discriminatory and illegal, he added. )(ln the computer you need to succeed in the real world and a chance to use it there 'Ey a Macintosh and enter Apples Real World Sweepstakes.
