Three small children were placed with two mentally imbalanced foster parents where one of the children died from mistreatment and starvation. Later in life, one child dealt with the trauma by becoming a murderer of three child killed the blind mice. The grown-u- p foster mother and now seeks the death of two persons who were blind to the foster familys situation, too blind to prevent a childs death. A notebook was found near the foster mothers body with the address of Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse just opened by the newly married Mollie and Giles Ralston (Shannon Tomson and Peter Tagg). Obviously, it will be the next scene of crime in Agatha Christies The Mousetrap, directed by Jan Shelton. Michael Kartchner and Ryan Schows set design for Monkswell Manor looks like a nostalgic page from a Victorian house magazine. The manor actually surrounds the audience members, as they are seated on the stage. Adjoining rooms and a set of backstairs off stage allow the seven suspects to circulate behind the audience and through the manors Great Hall. For anyone who thinks they are a good judge of character, the Masque Clubs presentation of The Mousetrap is a must-seThe seating arrangement allows an intimate e. Shelton did an excellent job of having each character develop as a likely suspect; all had opportunity to execute the murder of one of the characters in the first act. The casts characterizations mesh with the plays xenophobic message, aptly put by Mrs. Ralston: Perhaps you cant trust anyone. Perhaps everyones a stranger. Actually two of the characters continue to be strangers even after the murderer is discovered. The mysterious guests are never revealed as to purpose or origin; they are merely red herrings that Christie uses to misdirect the sleuthing gaze. Another minor and unfortunate detail caught the eye in this thriller designed for the observant. There was an incident where dialogue was not adapted for the stage directions. Detective Sergeant Trotter (Michael Stasinos) berated Mrs. Ralston for not being more attentive as she entered the Great Hall from the kitchen, but she obviously had entered from the direction of the drawing room. The Mousetrap continues tonight through Saturday March 31 at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium. Seating is limited.
