Show THE THUNDERBIRD )ERBIRD BASKETBALL SQUAD SUSC MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1989 Roberts relies on assistants Behind the SUSC basketball players yet another team, somewhat invisible, that is largely responsible for what happens to the squad. That team is the core of assistant coaches, behind Head Coach Neil Roberts, woven into the network that makes up Thunderbird mens basketball. Steve Hodson is beginning his third season as an assistant coach at SUSC, Hodson was a starter and team leader on SUSCs 1977 squad that advanced to the NALA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo. He led both the 1976 and 1977 Bird teams in assists. A former player in high school at Orem, Utah, is Steve Hodson all-sta- te Steve Hodson, Randy Adams and all Hodson was also an conference player at Utah Valley Community College where he played before transferring to SUSC. As a Mountain Bird, he earned Athletic Conference honors. Prior to joining the SUSC staff in 1987, Hodson spent four years as head coach at Cedar High School, three years as an assistant coach with current SUSC Head Coach Neil all-distr- ict UNDERBIRD STATISTICS all-Roc- ills 8, C. IERN UTAH STATE SCHEDULE ky Roberts at Dixie College, one year as junior varsity coach at SUSC, and one year each as an assistant coach at Granite High School in Salt Lake City and Cedar City High School. Randy Adams joined the SUSC basketball staff as an assistant coach during the summer of 1988. He was a football, basketball, and baseball letterman at Southwestern High School in Flint, Mich., and a three-yea- r starter on the baseball team at Central Michigan University. Adams received his bachelors degree from CMU in 1968 and his masters degree in athletic administration from the same institution in 1987. From 1968 until 1982 he served as athletic director and head basketball coach at four Michigan high schools. Twice he was named regional Coach of the Year. Adams then moved to Arizona where he was an assistant basketball coach at Mesa Community College for two years. He then moved up to a head basketball coaching position at Scottsdale Community College where he served for two years before coming to SUSC. Ted Bianco is one of three graduate assistant coaches. He transferred from CEU where he was an assistant coach and has helped in various outlets and observed and learned game strategy from the other coaches. Bianco is looking forward to his own coaching career. His primary interest is coaching high school basketball, where he feels he can gain good experience. Jerry Naulls and Randy Simkins are both new to the coaching ranks, but not to SUSC basketball. Both played four years at SUSC, completing their tenure last year. They join the staff this year as grad assistants. Last season Naulls led the Birds in scoring with a 16.6 average. He also averaged 4.3 assists and had 59 steals, the leader in that category. Simkins averaged 7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. He also had 13 blocked shots and 22 steals. Randy Adams Ted Bianco PAGE 11 |
