Bluebeards Castle is the exploration of a mans soul, Erwartung the exploration of a womans subconscious. Jessye Norman will be featured in both operas and contribute to the psychological preoccupation in each plot. In Bluebeards Castle Norman plays the new wife of the enigmatic Bluebeard, played by Samuel Ramey. The monodrama Erwartung will have its broadcast premiere with Norman as a terrified woman searching desperately for her murdered lover. James Levine is the conductor of both operas, and Peter Allen is the broadcast announcer. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson will discuss the art of the piano encore during the single intermission.
