Show THE THUNDERBIRD SUSC THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 1989 PAGE Church hearing closed to public After two months, mystery continues to shroud the Gordon Ray Church murder case, as efforts by the press Tuesday to open a preliminary hearing and lift a gag order on the case were fruitless. Despite efforts of attorneys for the Society of Professional Journalists of Utah, the Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune , East Millard County Justice of the Peace Ronald R. Hare closed the hearing to the public and declined to lift a gag order that has been in effect since the incident. Church, a senior theatre arts major at SUSC, was beaten to death with a tire iron and tire jack Thanksgiving week. Michael Anthony Archuleta and Lance Conway Wood, both former inmates at Cedar Citys Iron County Correctional Facility, were arrested Nov. 23 and have been charged with first degree homicide and other felonies. Archuleta and Wood, who were released less than a month before Churchs murder, allegedly kidnapped Church from Cedar City, killed him and abandoned his car in Salt Lake City. Wood is believed to have later led police to Churchs partially buried body, 12 miles north of Beaver near Interstate 15. Official information concerning the case has been subject to a gag order, which prohibits investigators, prosecutors or court personnel from discussing the case. Attorneys Tuesday proposed that the order be lifted. The public has a right to know what criminal things are happening on their streets, said attorney Michael OBrien. For many, the only way for them to know is through the news. I would submit that the cats already out of the bag, he said, referring to the large COUPON BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE! Hare denied public access to the hearing on the grounds that the brutal nature of the crimes would create so much publicity as to jeopardize the defendants rights to a fair trial before an unprejudiced jury. Reid said the experience helped him. My awareness of opportunities both in and out of government is much broader now.
