L y - .1 Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson would have swelled with pride to hear Juana Maria Bordas praise the American dream of cultural equality and liberty at Thursday's Convocation. Having lived in Nicaragua, Chile and the United States, Bordas, owner and chief executive officer of Mestiza Management Services, Denver, Colo., provided a credible look at America's acceptance of different cultures in her speech, 'The American of the Future.' "We are a country who has chosen to bring people from all over the world," said Bordas. "An America that embraces, respects and encourages cultural differences. An America that fulfills its destiny and mission that was stated 200 years ago in the constitution." When the constitution was written, "it was a dream, a vision, not a reality. Those founding fathers had rung the bell of justice, had stirred the dream of equality and so America began to believe in a country of liberty," said Bordas. However, Bordas said that the struggle to achieve the dream of liberty and equality has been a long and difficult one, because of America's ethnocentricity, or each person's belief that their own way is right. She said, "As foreigners came, they blended into the American way of life shedding cultural distinctions, their languages and their customs. The melting pot theory molded an America where sameness was preferred over diversity, cultural conformity over differences, national identity over cultural identity and ethnocentricity over pluralism. It created an America that encouraged you to cut of your ties with your history and your language," and consequently the "dream of America's constitution lay sleeping until the stirring of the civil rights movement of the '60s." Bordas explained how every culture has something to offer. For example she said that the American culture "is analytical, structural, linear. A culture that challenges you to think in the scientific method." However, in comparison she said the the spiritual, the Hispanics "deal more with the emotional, the worth of being. "Learning different cultures gives you an opportunity to experience different parts of yourself," said Bordas. "Hispanic culture gives you permission to express your feelings." Bordas emphasized the need for expanding our cultural awareness by quoting Martin Luther King, who said, "We all came over in different boats, but we're in the same boat now." schedule available for fall class organization 1988-8- 9 Blues will blend with the greens, reds, and purples of Grassy Meadows Sky Ranch when a rompin band called the Mighty Flyers sends its first note over the valley ) TACG The dance will begin at 6 p.m., continuing through a dramatic sunset and on into the night.
